Two questions.  Who is Robert Taylor and when did Leo become right-footed

A lot of people are wondering that.  From Wiki.  He is Finnish and his father was an English footballer who played in Finland in the 90's.  He's essentially played English non-league (5th division or lower) and then in Scandinavia playing for clubs in Finland, Sweden, and then Norway before his move to Inter Miami.

Almost sounds like an MLS version of Jamie Vardy.

Welcome home Sam.

Adekugbe agreed to an MLS contract through 2026, with a club option for 2027. The transaction was completed on Wednesday, prior to the close of the Major League Soccer's Secondary Transfer Window. Who are Tigres UANL? An inside look at Friday's opponents

On Friday, Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue their Leagues Cup 2023 campaign in the Round of 32 against a familiar foe in LIGA MX side Tigres UANL. Kickoff from BC Place is set for 7:30 p.m. PT, with tickets available at whitecapsfc.com/tickets.

To get you set for Friday's match, we take a deep dive at Tigres, their key pieces, our history with them, and much more.

Who are Tigres UANL?

One of the favourites to win Leagues Cup 2023.

They are a powerhouse, and if you make a mistake, they have the quality throughout their team to punish you.

Just ask MLSsoccer.com expert analyst Matt Doyle, who has them as the second favourite to win the Leagues Cup.

This is a big challenge for the 'Caps, but they will be up for it.

History against Tigres

In 2017, the 'Caps made it all the way to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions League, taking on Tigres UANL, the giants of the region and the highest spending club.

The 'Caps battled valiantly. After a 2-0 defeat in Mexico, the Blue & White scored inside the first five minutes at BC Place to cut it to 2-1. They had chances to tie it as well, but ultimately Tigres proved too strong and won the second leg 2-1, taking it 4-1 on aggregate.

Who are their key players?

Interestingly, while Whitecaps FC only have only have one player remaining from their 2017 roster, there are a few players still with Tigres that featured for them back in April 2017 at BC Place.

This includes starting goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán, fullback Javier Aquino, defensive midfielder Guido Pizarro, and of course striker André-Pierre Gignac. Also, winger Luis Quiñones played against the ‘Caps in the first leg in Monterrey.

The ageless Gignac, a former French national team star, is highly regarded as one of the very best strikers in the region, even at the age of 37, while the 32-year-old Quiñones is as crafty a winger as they come.

This year they also added 23-year-old Mexican prodigy Diego Lainez, who famously joined Alphonso Davies in speaking to FIFA congress to help bring the 2026 World Cup to North America.

What happens next?

The winner of Friday's match will advance to play the winner of Portland Timbers and CF Monterrey of LIGA MX in the Round of 16.

Should the 'Caps play Monterrey, the match will be played at BC Place this coming Tuesday, August 8. If the 'Caps play Portland, it will be played at Providence Park.

Tigres 1  Vancouver 1   Tigres wins on PKs.

And so much for that.

An entertaining game, especially the first half-hour wherein both teams were motoring back and forth.  The game then settled.

Both goals were well taken - Vite scoring early in the first half and Tigres tying it up in the second.

A sparse crowd, the majority of whom seemed to be cheering for Tigres.

So it's on to the Round of 16 for Tigres and on to waiting for the MLS season to start up again for the Whitecaps.

Miami 4 Dallas 4     Miami wins on PKs

Another game.  Another win for Miami.  Another two goals for Messi.  (He now has 7 in four games.)

But Dallas had them.   Leading by two goals with about 10 minutes left in the game, Dallas had them.  And then they let them go.   One of the strangest own goals you'll see wherein a Dallas player looked like he forgot what team he was playing for and headed the ball into his own net.  And then Messi scores late from a free kick to tie the game.  He also scored the opening goal of the game.

A very entertaining game.  It's too bad Apple didn't release it to network tv.  A game like this could only generate more interest in their Season Ticket package.

This thread is no longer a Whitecaps thread.  Not even an MLS thread.  Just Messi

that own goal was an absolute BANGER though

Queretaro won their match against New England on PKs and will advance to the Leagues Cup quarter finals.

Which is neither here nor there.

But I was watching the game and one of Queretaro's forwards looked familiar.  I then realized (after the announcers mentioned it) that it was former Whitecaps player Camilo Sanvezzo.

I was surprised he was still playing soccer.  He started the game and played for about eighty minutes before being subbed off.

Got me to thinking about him and checked out Wikipedia.   He played three seasons for the Caps, from 2011-2013.  His first year here was good, he dropped off during his second season and then was great during his final season here.  He actually won the MLS Golden Boot award in 2013 with 22 goals(!).

After that third season something went awry in his relationship with the team and he signed with Queretaro even though he was still under contract with the Whitecaps.  The move was eventually finalized and that was that.  The Whitecaps best scoring player was gone.

Over the years, he bounced around the Mexican League for a bit before eventually winding up back at Queretaro.

Consider, though, what might have happened had he stayed.  He's 35 and still starting for a first division Mexican team.  Which means he could still be playing in MLS.  We could have used his goals through those years.

Adekube and Laryea seem like such great players when they play for Canada. I can't wait for them to suit up for the Caps. Weird that they don't get consistent playing time overseas.

I'm looking forward to seeing them play, too.   A few weeks ago I made a post saying I didn't think the Caps would make the playoffs this season.  Of their remaining 12 games, 8 are on the road.  And the Caps have a very poor road record.  Maybe Adekube and Laryea can change that.
