Portland Schools Spend $500k to Deem PB&J Sandwiches Racist

Recommended Posts

Oh boy....

PORTLAND, Ore. – Dr. Verenice Gutierrez, a principal with Oregon’s Portland Public Schools, has become convinced that America’s “white culture” negatively influences educators’ world view and the manner in which they teach their students.

For instance, last year a teacher in the district presented a lesson that included a reference to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Gutierrez says that by using sandwiches as an illustration, the teacher was engaged in a very subtle form of racism.

“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” asked Gutierrez, according to Portland Tribune. “Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

The article is actually quite interesting. There is SOME validity to their thoughts, however, when you move to a new country, would you not want your kids to learn the way of the country? Wasn't the whole reason to move to North America to adopt a new lifestyle? The school system tries to groom children to succeed in the country in which they live. The cultural values of other countries just would not work here. Should their values work? I want them to as I often envy other cultures and their sense of community and goodwill to one another. Dependence on others really isn't so bad yet is viewed so poorly.

Why not just make school questions like those children books where you make choices that take you to different pages and storylines, so as not to disturb the childrens'/parents' delicate sensibilities?!?

Jack gave Jill two...

Apples --> Turn to page 3

Tortillas --> Turn to page 4

Big Macs --> Turn to page 5
