And I don’t have anything against Portman, although she did have about 7 years of duds (Timberlake film, Your Highness, 2 Thor films, Terrence Malick film, Jane got a Gun). But otherwise, she’s a capable actress. Not great, just capable. And that’s what I thought her character was and needed to be in Annihilation. Capable. And she was good. But, unlike Garland’s last film which was also written well, it required terrific performances. While I think Annihilation is an easier film to enjoy than Ex Machina, and a more satisfying sci-fi watch, what drove it was the story and environment the characters were in, not so much the characters themselves. My introduction into South Korean film, and I've been a massive fan ever since. Monty Posted March 15, 2018 Share Posted March 15, 2018 Star Wars: The Last Jedi Sat down with the wife (hadn’t seen it yet) and my mom (she had seen it) to watch it again last night. I left the room with 30 minutes left and was fighting to keep my eyes open this time around. More bored this time around, and the Casino Planet is more cringe than I remembered it being. And out of all the characters who were 100% not needed for the film (ie: Tran, Phasma, Codebreaker), Holdo (Laura Dern - who I always enjoy) was the worst. Felt like she was actually the most useless. But there’s some stiff competition for that title in this movie. I also have a hard time believing that the psychologist would allow Lena to bring that with her given that they were trying to cover all of this up in the first place... It doesn’t bother me because all movies have to have things that push the narrative forward. Quite regularly, those things lead the audience going, “Really?” But if this was a real life situation, would anyone actually think anything of a small piece of jewelry? Especially considering all the other horrific sh*t that’s going on around them to keep them occupied? Probably not. That’s why it didn’t bother me. For movies that are filled with “Why was this choice made?” (see: everything in The Last Jedi), I didn’t see this as something that took away from the film at all. But that’s me.
