Yeah it's not that the back story wasn't well done. It's the 'what' I have a problem with, not the 'how'.

They have constructed a really amazing sci-fi concept, and a really great adventure for the character - I'm not sure if I'm saying this right - but, I'm thinking you want your theme to be about something greater than the tangibles, not something that I would personally consider as

Interesting.  Hard to talk about until @riffraff sees it because I don’t want to spoil things for him.   But I get what you’re saying (I think?).   Now go see it RR so we can discuss it!

Thought she was just “ok”. Thought everyone else in the movie did a better job in their respective roles than she did. She wasn’t awful, just didn’t think her performance was held the movie together.

Fair enough.  Funny how it’s easy to get different things out of movies.   I honestly felt she was the one that really drove the movie forward and what made it so engaging for me

Totally.

And I don’t have anything against Portman, although she did have about 7 years of duds (Timberlake film, Your Highness, 2 Thor films, Terrence Malick film, Jane got a Gun). But otherwise, she’s a capable actress. Not great, just capable.

And that’s what I thought her character was and needed to be in Annihilation. Capable. And she was good. But, unlike Garland’s last film which was also written well, it required terrific performances. While I think Annihilation is an easier film to enjoy than Ex Machina, and a more satisfying sci-fi watch, what drove it was the story and environment the characters were in, not so much the characters themselves. At least, that’s what I took from it.

Yeah. Let's face it, everyone went to the theatre to find out wtf was going on inside the shimmer, not to learn Portman's character's inner turmoil, as interesting as that is.

And we got our money's worth.

There are three books in the series in total. I wonder if the movie will also be a series. Nothing in imdb so far.

Watched I Saw The Devil ( 2010 ) for the first time this year. Absolutely brutal revenge flick by South Korean director Jee-woon Kim. My introduction into South Korean film, and I've been a massive fan ever since. I've now worked my way through his entire filmography, and several other prominent South Korean directors. 9/10

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Sat down with the wife (hadn’t seen it yet) and my mom (she had seen it) to watch it again last night.

I left the room with 30 minutes left and was fighting to keep my eyes open this time around. More bored this time around, and the Casino Planet is more cringe than I remembered it being.

And out of all the characters who were 100% not needed for the film (ie: Tran, Phasma, Codebreaker), Holdo (Laura Dern - who I always enjoy) was the worst. Felt like she was actually the most useless. But there’s some stiff competition for that title in this movie. Tran wasn’t needed, either.

Death Wish 7/10

I really enjoyed it.  It's not a deep movie.  Lots of action.  The NRA would love it.

Is this a remake of the Charles Bronson one, two, three, four ... or however many he made?  Those were fun to watch for sure.

I thought Jennifer Jason Leigh was bad and other than her, the only character that got much attention was Portman.

Overall, I didn't really like the movie. Maybe a 6/10.

You expect me to believe that 900 pound gator with hybrid teeth couldn't take down a 115lb woman?.

You expect me to believe that in the middle of the night that one lady is able to silently steal Lena's necklace (why is she doing this in the first place), round up the other two, hog tie them, and then do the same to Lena)? That was a pretty bold suspicion. I also have a hard time believing that the psychologist would allow Lena to bring that with her given that they were trying to cover all of this up in the first place...

  Reveal hidden contents

For a sci-fi film, I usually allow small things like this to occur, as I have to suspend disbelief to begin with. Fair enough with the gator, but it didn’t take away anything from the movie, because the point of that scene wasn’t that they were being attacked, but what the alligator turned out to be, which was essentially an introduction to the environment they were in.

As for the later scene, I thought the same thing with all three in the night. But again, it didn’t end up being point.

I do disagree with you in the small part about her bringing the necklace to begin with. For all they were concerned, because they weren’t receiving information back from the other team, electronics didn’t work in there. So a picture of her husband around her neck really wouldn’t raise suspicions. And considering they didn’t know what they would find in there, they also didn’t know what the environment was doing to them.

JJL’s character behaviour I found to be a choice as well, seeing as though all characters were damaged in their own way, and her’s was 100% understandable why she acted that way. My co-worker (RIP) dealt with the same thing and he acted very similarly. Pretty accurate to me.

Aside from that, it’s fine if you don’t like the movie. No issues there. I like movies others don’t, and vice versa. For me, sci-fi movies are more “miss” than “hit”. And I found this to be one of the better ones.

It would after the found Kane's name on the list and saw him in that video... JJL agreed that it would be a bad idea for the group to be aware of that this man was Lena's husband, yet they still continued on without taking precautions to avoid this big reveal. It is a pet peeve of mine when writers have characters behave in ways they normally would not as plot-turning devices.

After the fact, I guess. But considering she consistently wore around her neck and never took it off, the thinking by anyone would be, “Is anyone going to yank my jewelry off my neck and look at a small picture inside because they think the picture might be related to this event?

It doesn’t bother me because all movies have to have things that push the narrative forward. Quite regularly, those things lead the audience going, “Really?” But if this was a real life situation, would anyone actually think anything of a small piece of jewelry? Especially considering all the other horrific sh*t that’s going on around them to keep them occupied? Probably not. That’s why it didn’t bother me. For movies that are filled with “Why was this choice made?” (see: everything in The Last Jedi), I didn’t see this as something that took away from the film at all.

But that’s me. I found more to “dislike” in Ex Machina for “Really?” moments in their decisions, but still loved the movie overall.

I’m just surprised I liked Annihilation as much as I did, considering how mediocre of an actress Natalie Portman is.
