Yes, these guys had been great for us, but if every fan favorite stuck around just because they were 'liked' we would be worse than the Flames at this point. Teams need to adapt and get younger/cheaper or die. It happens in every sport. The Pittsburgh Steelers have won 2 Super Bowls pretty recently and they've let go of players like Hines Ward, James Harrison, etc., some of that due to the salary cap, but also because they have younger, cheaper options available. Ed Reed got cut from the Ravens right after winning a Super Bowl. The Giants cut a bunch of players after their Super bowl win. These teams know they can't hold onto older players just out of loyalty, it is a business, if you become ineffective and a younger player is a better option, you're cut. Show too much loyalty and you get teams like the Cowboys and Niner's once the salary cap came into place. It took them over a decade to recover. The Canucks are extremely lucky to have a goalie like Schneider NHL ready. If this was anything like the Burke era Canucks, it would be disasterous if Luongo was the only option going forward. The way he's been treated by both the fans and the media is downright embarrassing. To top it off, Luongo has been nothing but classy the entire time here, he never 'asked for a trade' either. The amount of hate Luongo gets is downright embarrassing. He's 2nd in the NHL in wins, he's second in shutouts for his career among active players. If we trade him, we'll regret it down the stretch. Trade Schneider, get some good young pieces back. We need a rehaul of our roster, we need a shakeup. I've never been a Gillis fan, his whole philosophy about 'getting tougher' hasn't won us a cup. I think AV needs to go, not necessarily because of our record, but because the players don't listen to him anymore. The team needs a coach who can motivate and AV just isn't that anymore. He's going to earn millions of dollars till he's retired and maybe after retirement under a ntc....ye sucks to be Lu as a part of one if the most "employee" conscious organizations in sports. This is equal to bumping henrik down to teh second line for Hodgson when he's in a slump. so yes, Luongo had been somewhat poorly treated by our fans and team, especially the fans. This is so simple, how can you not understand? Whether or not you want Luongo gone, you must be able to understand the reason many people do. Stop acting like it makes no sense. edit : also pretty tired of this "He took us to the SCF game 7" BS. our team was stacked as hell then. If we didn't make it really deep or win the cup, then it's a disappointment, and it was. He did the absolute furthest thing from putting the team on his back. He just managed to keep the number of meltdowns in net to a sustainable number to get us deep in the playoffs. (until the finals at least). that isn't even remotely the same as "him getting us to the stanley cup finals". almost any goalie would have "gotten us there" as well, with the team we had then. Slegr Posted March 12, 2013 Share Posted March 12, 2013 If the Canucks are going to go the distance this post-season, they will need some exceptional goaltending. I've seen both goalies have very average games this season, and also seen them both play great. To me, it makes perfect sense to keep them both until the summertime, and play the hot hand. Even though Thomas was scored on a bunch of times in that round, none of the games were ever allowed to get out of hand. Plus he had 2 shutouts in that series which is a popular defense for Luongo around here. If Dwayne Roloson was Luongo's opposition in the SCF we probably dont lose. Papayas Posted March 12, 2013 Share Posted March 12, 2013 pretty sure the reality is there is no defined starter here.....both goalies are playing games and are playing based on their success in those games. as well they are getting starts based on their success precedents - ie Schneids playing in Minny due to Lus lack of success there....i think you're misinterpreting what im saying here and the impression im getting is you seem to think that i am a supporter of one of but not both goalies. which im not. both goalies have performed similarly and are generally providing goaltending that gives the team a chance to win. just because Lu has said hes willing to waive his NTC and the media has jumped all over this epic saga doesnt mean that the reality is Corey has separated himself as a starter based on his performance.
