What happens if Luongo opts for early retirement? (purely theoretical)

This is simply discussing a theoretical option, I did not hear any rumours anywhere.

Does anyone know how much does VAN owe Lu if he decided to retire instead of coming back in the Fall? I believe that, mentally, he had moved on long before getting caught off-guard by the Schneider trade - and he may simply not stomach a return. How do you think he feels hearing "we desperately tried to get rid of you and couldn't, but we have full confidence in you as #1". He can see right through that BS and I am pretty sure that he cannot be at his best in this context.

This may very well be a crazy hypothesis, but if the league allows players to retire and then come back from retirement, maybe we can still hope for a Machiavellian way out of this mess. Lu can always change his mind and un-retire. With so many Italians surrounding this club, I have to consider this option

What are the League rules? Any loopholes?

PS1 Schneider trade:

MG has proven once again an "agent mentality" (as opposed to GM mentality), notably a glaring lack of foresight. He is incapable of running this club IMO.

PS 2 Luongo buyout:

Although I blame the ownership in geneal (for not firing MG simply based on reading CapGeek in the last 12-18 months), my wild guess is that Aquilini had wanted MG to pull the trigger on Luongo on a previous proposed deal (within the last year or so), but MG got too greedy (agent mentality again). So maybe Francesco washed his hands at that time. I am only bringing this up as a possible alternative to comments such as "Aquilini made a bad choice not to buy out Luongo", "he is distracted because his divorce" etc.

yes i'm sure Luongo will retire and leave 42million behind.. almost the total amount he made so far in his career just because he's pissed off.. or he could rather play mediocre the next season and force a buy out from ownership and play for a team of his choice if he's really that pissed off.

I was wondering too...if Lu retires lets say in 4 years, will his cap still effect the team or no?

If Luongo (hypothetically) retired this offseason (not happening), we would be hit with a cap-recapture penalty of $825,556 per season until the end of the contract.

If Luongo retired 4 seasons from now, we would be hit with a cap-recapture penalty of $2,590,533 per season until the end of the contract.

MG got stung, for sure.

Couldn't trade Luongo - but there are lots of contracts that can't be traded in the league. Lou Lamoriello signed Kovalchuk to one of them. And you would probably agree he knows what he is doing? The goalie marked has hit the floor, or haven't you noticed?

Interestingly, your idea elucidates one of the main lessons from the Trial of Socrates: That knowledge and wisdom do not transcend the boundaries of the structures on which they are built (a doctor knows medicine, but that doesn't mean he knows business, etc). Same with MG, he might still be thinking like an agent to a large degree, sure I'll buy that. And your next thought indicates you are a victim of it as well (aren't we all?): retiring and then unretiring doesn't do anything. Now if he could breach that contract and make it null and void for some reason, that might have more appeal - however unlikely that is to happen (NHL would not allow such a circumvention). The problem here is that "big brother" circa Orwell 1984 is in play - socialist NHL and redistribution to each according to his failures, etc etc

Still very frustrating how the league implements a rule to punish teams AFTER they were already signed. Why was there no grandfather rule put in place ? Why would the owners and players agree to this ?

The league came down a nixed the idea of Lecavilier getting traded to the leafs to be bought out and resign with Tampa. They quickly ammended the rules to disallow such a move. Why didnt they do this with the long term contracts as well ?

Enough of this, people. He's a professional. He's going on seven years in Vancouver. He may've accepted the fact he was likely headed out of town, but that doesn't mean he necessarily WANTED to leave. He'll come back and play lights out.
