I agree that VGK need to clear some cap and that Eakin and Miller will be key pieces they want to move out. They also need to move more cap out, and my guess is that it might be Reaves on the move. They don’t want to part with Tuch.

If they trade Eakin and Reaves, I don’t think they want any forwards back. Even if they ship out Eakin and Reaves they are flush with great forwards and will be tight against the cap so won’t want any back.

The main deal I see them doing with VAN is a 1-for-1 trade of Miller for Stecher. This way VGK gets a similar aged and level Dman back but they save some cap space. VAN should try and move Tanev (50% retained) but I don’t think Tanev fits with VGK style of play. VAN should take the deal because Miller is an upgrade on Stecher, particularly in his size.

Here’s what I think VGK might do:

Current cap hit = $83.15m

Put Clarkson onto LTIR, waive McKenzie, and trade:

Miller for Stecher

Eakin for picks

Reaves for picks

Salary OUT = $16.51m

Resign:

Karlsson, 1yr @ $5.25m

Gusev, 2yr @ $2.4m

Bellemare, 1yr @ $1.0m

Engelland, 1yr @ $1.0m

Nosek, 1yr @ $1.0m

Backup goalie, 2yr @ $1.0m

Adding Stecher $2.325m

Bringing up Hague $0.792m

Salary IN = $14.86m

Total cap = $81.5m

This still gives them a formidable roster:

Patches Stastny Stone

Marchessault Karlsson Smith

Gusev Haula Tuch

Carrier Bellemare Nosek

Zykov

Schmidt Theodore

McNabb Stecher

Merrill Engelland

Hague Holden

Fleury

Backup

Not sure they’d want two smurfs on their top two pairings on the right side but you never know, teams will do desperate things when they need to get under the cap.   They won’t be under pressure until close to the start of the season though as they can go over 10% until then.  Like the idea of adding Miller for Stecher or pretty much anyone on our R side, it would be an upgrade.  Man they are three lines deep with quality two-way forwards...

100% agree that they have a fantastic group of forwards.

But their D are smurfs??!!!!!!

Here are their H + W:

Schmidt (6’1”, 194)

Theodore (6’2”, 196)

McNabb (6’4”, 212)

Stecher (5’10”, 186)

Merrill (6’3”, 205)

Engelland (6’2”, 214)

Hague (6’6”, 214)

Holden (6’4”, 214)

Stecher is the only “smurf” IMO...

I'm worried about the age gap of swapping Gaudette for Eakin. Adam made big strides last year and now knows what the NHL is like. He definitely has the skills to be a 30-40 point guy.

Stetcher for Miller would be a great trade especially if we can land Myers and have a d group

Edler-Tanev

Hughes-Myers

Hutton-Miller

All playing around 20 minutes

I think the Canucks still could have enough room for a cap dump, if that's what's needed to make a stetcher-miller trade happen, and get a pick on top. Then that pick could be used to ship out Eriksson to a cap floor team

love to have Tuch in Van.. doubt it happens but who knows, JB might pull it off

I think there's a reasonable chance Miller comes our way, welcome upgrade in my books

not sure about Eakin.. I've seen him take one too many 3rd period major penalties that stymied a playoff run.. :bigblush:
