Popular Post Time Lord
The plan isn't to be at the bottom of the standings anymore. It's time to make a push. The team will experience an infusion of youth this season, with top prospects John Tavares, Drew Doughty, and Wayne Simmonds all making the jump. With Tavares, Simmonds, and free agent signing Scott Hartnell being added to the mix, the team essentially gains a forward line. This will be a massive step up from having one line on the team functioning as a tank line the past 3 seasons. Trading for Jay McKee and Sergei Gonchar gives the team a new top pairing, allowing Doughty to be eased into the lineup. Only 2 defensemen from last season remain, which should be a case of addition by subtraction. Jonas Hiller should also have an easier time in net behind an improved defense. The bottom 6 remains largely unchanged since it hasn't been a problem for this team. And in case Simmonds isn't ready, there are plenty of candidates to move up and take his spot. 20-year-old defenseman Colin Hallas will be given a shot in the NHL, and once again there will be reinforcements in case he isn't ready. A team doesn't normally go from 26 points to 100 over an off-season. Change takes time. There are a lot good teams competing for playoff spots, so it won't be easy to claim one. But it's time to try. New York Islanders 2009-2010 Ladislav Nagy [A] - Alexei Yashin - Wayne Simmonds Scott Hartnell - John Tavares - Kyle Okposo Jiri Hudler - Mike York [C] - Slava Kozlov Jeff Tambellini - Frans Nielsen - Guillaume Latendresse Eric Lindros Jay McKee - Sergei Gonchar Filip Kuba [A] - Drew Doughty Colin Hallas - Nick Boynton Justin Forrest Jonas Hiller Rick DiPietro 3
