Pretty obvious that ownership is the issue with this team. Until Aqua goes hands off or new owners come around nothing will change. If you fire the Coach/Management it'll be the same story.

Sadly I think the Canucks is all the owner has now. If only he could be convinced of a 2-3 year rebuild. Never give up

It's been the problem for years unfortunately. Hopefully they let this new regime actually do some work & make some tough decisions, but early indications are showing they won't.

We waited a long time to add a quality D,  and Myers has been the best they can do so far, we need a Myers replacement plan in place, and a young D around QHs age.    Severson may be one of those guys,  and the other needs to come in as a trade, otherwise, there isn't much hope  until we draft our way out of this.   Which could take 5-7 years.

Aucoin 92... and he was bad the first while ... Ohlund 94 ... we waited four years to see what he could do, and Japan eye injury stole what could have been a Norris type from us ... Sopel meh but still 95 and when did he come in.   This team needed OJ to work out ... he didn't so instead we need to make trades and or re-set the rebuild of we expect our D to improve.   Trotz could be a hail mary though.   That's the last card they have.   What he did with NYI was something ive rarely seen.   Taking a bad defensive team, that just lost their best player in Tavares, and making them one of the best defensive style teams overnight.  280ish goals against, to 200ish .

The key with Trotz is he needs to be the guy that this FO wants, and plays the system they want too. This is our biggest Achilles heel aside from RHD. The fact that the FO didn’t do anything over the summer is alarming. You rebuilt the whole FO; you have the right to get your coach. It might have been unpopular with the fans to fire BB at first, but all we care about is results. And Trotz is a savy experienced coach; the BB love would have subsided fairly quick.

Sadly it seems like once again ownership just put in a bunch of yes men.

With the new way the NHL is calling in front of the net the team needs very large strong players because tying up the stick is looked at as hooking more and more often. Small guys can't "box" out in front and loose most board battles. Large players play better in small spaces,, have a longer wing span and mostly are harder to shield away from the puck. They can also have a much bigger impact, literally in checking. Smaller guys avoid body checking reducing the effectiveness. Players like McNabb won't win any scoring races but players try to avoid him when skating down the ice.

All those named above were large and hit like trucks even Edler

To be a little fair, I don't think anyone expected us to be this bad, even management.

Even with the suspect defence coming into the season, Boudreau himself (on paper) said that he expected this to be a playoff team before the season began. Albeit probably a fringe playoff team.

I think they majorly failed on the Miller signing and were too hasty with that process.

JR and his crew handcuffed themselves by signing Miller long term when he still had the year left remaining on his deal.

They could've used that extra time to at least monitor the team's performances early this season before making a decision on him.

Knowing that they have a flimsy d-core and really anything could happen with a decent offence and bad defence.

It was not a surefire guarantee this team would succeed.

Also, these types of major "retirement" deals with the long term/high salaries are usually signed by consistent, elite contending teams (Think Kucherov with TB and Mackinnon with COL who both signed 8 year deals not too long ago).

The player and the team are in their primes and the player is rewarded for their contributions with that retirement contract while the team is still elite and contending yearly.

Not a team like this who's only made the playoffs twice (kind of, if you can even count the bubble playoffs) in the last 8 years now. And was still a TBD going into this season.

As a management group advertised with "years of experience and knowledge", you really had that little foresight?

You could say that management was handcuffed because of the cap problems caused by Benning and that they couldn't really make any major moves, but I'm not sure I believe that as much anymore.

They've already shown they're willing to trade picks for players like Stillman, pay a 3rd pick to get rid of Dickinson and also get rid of a 5th (although this doesn't hurt as much) for Bear.

What.. so if they're willing to do that, they couldn't have packaged picks plus, let's say a miller or a boeser to make a major move(s) for that defence? (which it desperately needs).

Instead of wasting those potential trade assets picks on plugs like Stillman? When we already have guys in the system like Burroughs and Brisebois who are either equal or better than him?

Mikheyev's been good but you couldn't have saved that precious cap space for room on the defence?

Like the title, I don't know if it's been laziness, miscalculation, incompetence, or mainly these guys just wanting to focus on being "woke" with who they hire rather than care about actual hockey ops....

but it's quite alarming when you see things like the PRESIDENT OF THE TEAM talking about not knowing his own head coach's contract option, which he blatantly admitted on HNIC.

It's alarming when the newly hired hockey execs in their opening press conferences and many interviews since last year, talked about needing to fix the problems of this team, that many fans were finally relieved to hear you say.... but haven't done anything to address them. Because there have been opportunities to do so.

All bark no bite.

Yeah laziness that’s the problem...

Aquaman and his ideas is still here: constantly, chasing a playoff spot.  Also I agree, that the Stillman (mainly) and Dermot trades were not REALLY necessary.

In the regular season, the team can compete but in a playoff setting: this roster is, at best playoff fodder.
