Picture this: he comes on as an assistant coach for the rest of the season and playoffs. Then, during the final game of the playoffs Manny gets dressed and sits on the bench all game. The last minute of the third period ticks down (Van is up 8-0 against Boston) and AV sends out Manny. 3 - 2 - 1 Manny is on the ice when Vancouver wins their 1st Stanley Cup EVER! The crowd goes wild! :towel: :towel: :towel:

Best wishes to Manny and his family. I don't want to see him leave the organization for a long time.

This is my sad face :(

Manny's injury has prevented him from being the player we all know he can be since his return. Many people on these forums were calling for his retirement as they could see the impact his injury was having on his play. Although some do it without any class, we all knew this was inevitable. The fact that Manny is going to stay on in a leadership capacity is excellent news. I can only imagine how much he will contribute to the development of our younger talent.

So lets do it for Rick, Luc and Manny.

Overall, I still think the canucks could use any of the following cup run pieces:

1) Rugged stay at home d-man (like a Willie Mitchell) Or a Tanev?

2) PK/Faceoff specialist to let Kesler focus on offensive play (which worked in 2011 when Manny took the defensive and shadowing role) Like Burrows?

3) 2nd line winger to complement Kes/Booth (maybe a passer first winger, O'Reilly or Iginla?) Or Kassian?

Pretty sure he is being put on long term IR

He won't be on LTI unless we go for a trade. By the way this now gives us at this moment 3.35 Million in cap space, with Ebbett, Weise, Barker, and Alberts all could be traded or whatever and we would almost have enough for Lecavelier BEFORE we make a deal invloving Luongo.

Do you know him personally? I can understand the players feeling sad. but people here are acting like they knew the guy his entire life.

It's called empathy. Maybe you should learn it.

This guy has worked his whole life to be in the NHL, and now all of that has just been taken away. If you care about the players on the team on any sort of level, you would have to feel bad for him.

Stellar pro. Excellent face-off man. Good leader. Wish he was back to pre-injury form. All the best to an awesome Canuck.

Something to think about...

The Canucks have Kes and Booth coming back. They need to make 2 roster spots available and only have 2 players who do not need to pass through waivers, JShray and Tanev, to send down. Canucks don't want to send either youngster down, so...

Manny is out for the season on LTIR. More cap space available now and, an all valuable roster spot for either Schroeder or Tanev.

I hear Ebbet has a deep groin tear... might be ruptured...

Pretty amazing that he was still one of the best faceoff men in the league despite playing half-blind. I know his play has been lacking of late but a career-ending decision came out of nowhere.

Faceoff coach or strenght and conditioning.

That way he can still travel with the team and be a good locker room guy.

You don't have to know someone personally to realize that it sucks to have your career end prematurely, especially when you have a chance at winning a championship which has eluded you your entire career.

Orland Kurtenbach and Dennis Kearns had just been torched 8-1 by the Habs, but they still took time to come out to meet us, some fellow BC boys who were playing hockey in Montreal. THAT"S what being a Canuck is!

Malhotra is not the first one to retire without winning a cup due to an injury and will not be the last.

That's pretty disappointing news that his career might be over. I feel bad for the guy, he was a good 3rd line center before his injury and he seemed like a character person.

Sad, but absolutely needed to happen. I honestly do see Manny as a future head coach, would love to see him become part of the coaching staff. Special teams coach? We sure could use one..

It intrigues me that this isn't something that's happened recently, that it's been in the pipeline for a while. It's interesting if we know how long this has been thought about..

If he comes back, I hope he comes back better than ever. Gotta stay positive :)

Really sad news. Feel for the guy. Hope he gets a job in the organization someday cause he's been nothing but a stand up guy. All the best to Manny and his family. All that said, it sadly had to be done, he hasn't been the same player.

Unfortunate, but this scenario works best for both sides.

Manny just have another child born, so this will give him lots of free time to spend with his family, something most athlete don't have during their career. Plus he still gets paid, which is always nice.

The Canucks can now free a roster spot and save some money on the cap.

Since he's not retiring, he'll still be part of the team and his name will be engraved on the Stanley Cup later this year :towel:

I'm sure he'll be still close to the locker room for the rest of this season. My concern is if Manny still thinks he can play regardless of what Gillis or the rest of the Canucks organization thinks. He's only 32 right now, and besides failing a medical exam nothing can stop him from trying to sign elsewhere this summer to resume his playing career if he wants too. I'm sure he'll be hush about it now but something tells me he'll want to still play.

Part of me wants to be wrong and hope he stays with the Canucks in some capacity, but I don't want him to stay because someone else told him his career is over. If Manny has accepted that he can't be an effective player then stay. Otherwise I hope a freak injury isn't a premature end to his career.

By the way learn how to spell SHIRIKOV who is this shirakov

Amazingly on his first shift Kassian would have had a breakaway if Kesler knew how to pass. And he still got switched with Weiss. And note it is "Weiss" not "Wise".

Listened to Gillis on the team regarding Manny.
Mike made a hard decision and one he knows all too well as his career ended with injury.
Best to Manny and kudo's to the GM for how he handled the entire affair.
I think the GM was extremely cognisant of Manny as a pro and patient / fair to Manny and for that I will give MG two thumbs up.

Sorry if this has been covered but... Gillis sounded adamant that the club went to him, whereas Bieksa sounded like it was Manny's decision...
