Too bad Lemieux didn't fall to us. Figured they'd take Demko when Lemieux wasn't available.

Too bad for Markstrom. His NHL future is unsound.

This has no impact on Markstrom.

He'll be at least 30 by the time Demko is ready.

Yeah... Demko is likely 4 years away at the earliest to challenge for an NHL roster spot. Hes got huge upside and was ranked the best available goalie in this draft by ISS. He could also start for USA at the WJHC next season, perhaps on a team with Cole Cassels.

I really like this pick, but like most prospect goaltenders, he's 4-6 years away from making an impact.

This is the pick that made me most excited. USA have developed some really nice goalie prospects the last couple of years. I even thought that Demko would have been a good option at 24. I'm really surprised that Calgary took McDonald over Demko.

"Plain and simple, a team that drafts Thatcher Demko is going to get a solid goaltender who can carry a team and help them win. It’s hard to overstate or understate what a goaltender will bring to a team. Surround them with the right defence and a solid coach and magic can happen. As an 18 year-old goaltender, Demko has drown comparisons to the likes of Cory Schneider, Jimmy Howard and Joe Cannata. While comparisons are fine and dandy, goaltenders have a lot to prove. Demko won’t be leave Boston College anytime soon and will need at least another 3-4 season’s before it’s NHL time.

Thatcher Demko can easily become the anchor or cornerstone of a team needing a franchise goaltender. Give him the time he needs to develop and he won’t let you down."

Just thought I should share this from my other post now that it's locked just for anyone who didn't get a chance to read it.

Cheers

Demko mentioned in his TEAM1040 interview that he had 8-hour days at summer school (for a month and a half) to get to Boston College early. Shows that he's willing to put in the work. Linden (in his most recent 1040 interview) also said that he was a terrific interview at the combine.

I really like this pick, if anything it should help motivate Markstrom & Lack + Cannata & Eriksson to really improve themselves as by adding this guy it starts to create some internal competition for spots.

Also by having so much goaltending depth we can really take time with this guy and develop him correctly (let him play out his College career & give him a season or 2 in Utica).

I also slightly disagree with the whole 'goalies are easy to trade for so drafting them is somewhat pointless'. Usually if a good / great young goalie gets moved its either a) an incompetent GM or B) you have multiple young goalies in the system or a great goalie already.

I would also rather be as deep as vancouver is in goalie prospects than be a team like Winnipeg that has somewhat neglected the position and they are stuck with a, in my opinion, overated average goalie like Pavelic and there are a few other teams that are now realizing that crappy goaltending cripples the best of teams (ie Pittsburgh come playoff time).
