Nessnuck27
Does anyone know how his contract works. So he is an Rfa right now. Does he become a ufa tomorrow since there is no qualifying offer for him?
King Heffy
They qualified him, he just won't accept it. He's an RFA and we'd have to overpay with both $$$ and picks in order to prevent CBJ from matching the offer.
motzaburger
We would shell up 4 first rounders for the money he is looking for.
PONCHE
Not that it was ever really a concern to begin with. Kekalainen had already said he'd match any and all offer sheets thrown at Johansen and that the team owners were behind him with their wallets open. I'm all for good natured speculation but this is really quite the non-issue imo.

Probably be cheaper to trade for his rights...but I'd rather wait 4 years since we still have the Sedin's/Horvat/Gaunce to work out the top center spots. Brendan Gaunce
Worth the overpayment. Would be our future 1st line C
lipsknot
So if he decides to not sign the offer, then he becomes a ufa? If that's true then do we still get penalized for potentially signing him?
granpappy
this is a laugher. i remember the specualtion we were going to get him for kesler.
-Virtanen
Offer sheet Johansen for 4 years, doesn't matter how much cash. JUST enough to make him eligible for UFA. He either signs it and CBJ matches and he's eligible for UFA in 4 years and we can sign him OR The don't match and we get him win win.
King Heffy
So if he decides to not sign the offer, then he becomes a ufa? If that's true then do we still get penalized for potentially signing him? If he doesn't sign, he's still an RFA. If we give him an offer sheet and it's matched, we're not penalized directly, but other GM's do not look favourably on offer sheets. It hurts future trade negotiations (especially with CBJ).
PONCHE
my understanding is that the act of offering the qualifying, CBJ automatically retains his rights as an RFA. Any deal that would be struck with any other team(an offer sheet) could be matched by Columbus (something they've said repeatedly that they will do)
Mr.53
this is a laugher. i remember the specualtion we were going to get him for kesler. I remember those. I saw one that said "To WPG: Ryan Kesler To VAN: Ryan Johanson, Boone Jenner, First" hahaha lol.
canucks155
Jarmo Kekalainen has already said he will match ANY offer sheet. Unless a crappy team like Buffalo comes along and has to surrender their next year's 1st +++, he's matching anything.
Derp...
if he signs a 4 year deal, he will be a UFA after that deal. CBJ doesn't want to give him the term because they can retain him as an RFA if he signs 2 or three years. I would offer sheet him 5 million for 4 years if he would take that, and then that would guarantee he would be a UFA at the end of this contract, age 25, ready to come home to BC! If CBJ didn't take that deal we would lose a first and a third... peanuts, really because he would put us in a playoff spot. This is not happening this is purely armchair GMing
King Heffy
We don't even HAVE our 3rd next year.
newgm
Only way Canucks would ever get Johansen is in a trade, that seems extremely unlikely except for the fact the kid was out yapping about how the offer from Columbus is a slap in the face and he was insulted. That kind of language can poison the well pretty quickly, but it's doubtful we could provide the pieces Columbus would demand if the situation deteriorated to the point they would consider moving RJ. Also, even if you could pull off such an unlikely scenario, do you really want a player that demands insane long term money after one good season? sounds like trouble if you ask me and we just got rid of Kesler. sirensong
So if he decides to not sign the offer, then he becomes a ufa? If that's true then do we still get penalized for potentially signing him? No matter what he does, he does NOT become a UFA. He's an RFA period. He can sign with CBJ or he can sign an offersheet which CBJ will match. To get near something that CBJ might consider not matching would cost 4 1st rd draft picks and CBJ would still match in all likelyhood.

sirensong87
Or he can have his rights traded, then sign with his new team. True. But they aren't trading him. Kekolainen said when he inquired about getting a top pick in this years draft teams said Johansen and that was the end of the conversation. You want Johansen? Horvat, Tanev, Bonino, and a 1st MIGHT get a conversation started. But would likely be ignored as well.
