[Speculation] Berglund and pieces for Eberle

Sidney Crosby*, Anze Kopitar, Jonathan Toews, John Tavares*, Ryan Johansen

* led their team in scoring in their rookie seasons

These five guys are the only ones that I can think of in the last decade (2004-2014) that have come into the NHL without a role model top 6 center in the roster and found success. In other words, they turned their franchises around at least at the forward positions.

Giroux had Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Briere. Stamkos had Lecavalier. Krejci had Savard. Couture has Thornton and Pavelski. Benn had Brad Richards. Duchene had Stastny. Getzlaf had MacDonald and Selanne. Henrik and Daniel had WCE.

Many stars needed help of a role model veterans to become who they are today. I think RNH, Hall and Eberle need role model veteran forwards to take it to the next level.

Hell, the Sedins and Kesler didn't take their next step until Sundin's brief stint here. It matters.

If it takes Eberle to get RNH and Hall that veteran, so be it. They need to pay a price to get that leader that can hold these kids accountable and take them to the next level because they sure as hell aren't going to attract a veteran on the UFA market.

I'm just glad Bo is in the presence of the Sedins to have the torch passed onto him. From Smyl to Linden, from Linden to Naslund, from Naslund to the Sedins and now the Sedins to Horvat. With McCann, Cassels, Shinkaruk, Jensen and Gaunce knocking as well, we are in good hands for a solid transition period where we will still be competitive without tanking.

I like your post very much but that's a stretch.

But why give up Eberle if they can get a Lecavailar for next to nothing.

Crosby didn't have a mentor??? Hmm super Mario anyone?

True. Lecavalier would be a good pickup for them and they could get him for almost nothing. If they can convince PHI to retain some cap of that contract, Lecavalier would be a very enticing pickup for them.

In the roster. I said he never had a mentor in the roster - Mario and Crosby never played together.

Actually Crosby's started the season playing along side Mario.

They were PPG players that year but they explicitly said Sundin helped their game and approach to it take off. Look at Kesler as well. Although he wasn't that impactful in the regular season, he had a pretty good playoffs for us (8p in 8 GP) and helped a lot in the dressing room. For a cash investment, why not? We didn't give up anything. Really good move by MG...for once.
