Anyone else think the Leafs will be 1st round fodder for the Bruins with all the goals they have been letting in lately?
-
@5Fivehole0 Sportsnet said the issue of 1 v 8, 2v 7 (old format) was raised at the GM meetings but that the 'league' likes the existing format as it allows for tighter games/series in the first 2 rounds, which creates more viewership. I guess they feel, as more teams drop out, you get fewer and fewer watching the playoffs as we move to the finals, which means less tv revenue, which makes sense. So from a revenue perspective they want the best match ups early when everyone is watching to max tv revenue. They also felt it creates more rivalries. I am with you, what matters to me, you, real fans is the best 4 teams in the semis, and best 2 in the finals. Last year, that actually happened anyways, but many years it has not. What's the point being a top team over the 82 game schedule if you don't get an advantage come playoff time. I loved the old format as well.

did anyone hear JB on 650 this morning? supposedly he mapped out their plans for the remainder of this season and next season.

when I think about the arrival of Boeser, then Pettersson, and now Hughes, this video always comes to mind

@RetroCanuck I think what's even MORE important is that many of our young guys have to take the next step and become less of a supporting cast and more drivers and leaders. Bo is really the only player (and Petey this year0 who has year after year, taken it upon himself to become better and better and better in all facets of his game. I see the same drive in Petey so that's not going to be a big issue, Stech as well but he'll never be a game changer. Guy's we need to now help take the reigns are Boeser (he has a great deal to work on, his skating for one, defensive game, release, etc), Goldobin as we all know, Jake needs to take a big next step, baby steps time are done, Hutton, and to a lesser extent Gaudette and Demko. Many of the players have alot more in them but seem to still be stuck in the "I need still prove i can be an every day player" mentality vs "I need to be a difference maker mentality'. Bo and Petey never questioned if they were an every day player, they came in and from Day 1 wanted to be a difference makers, we need need more Bo/Petey mentality in the boys next year.

Oh look! The Stanky Oil down 2-0 already to the laughs! Oilers are just a massive ball of sweaty stanky ass

The Canucks just broke the leafs lmao

Remember a couple of years ago. We kept hearing how New Jersey, Florida and Arizona was bleeding money.
Notice we never hear of the financial struggles now? Does the NHL have a gag order?
-
Probably, because it decreases the impetus for expansion. Some billionaire who wants a team is better off buying those franchises and moving them, which the NHL frowns on, and it also makes such billionaire less willing to the pay the 750 mil expansion fee or whatever crazy number it is. It would be cheaper financially to buy those teams for certain. They probably keep it in house because those franchise fees also help those crap franchises. Its never good for the league to admit they misjudged a market. But its clear, all three of those teams have to be bleeding money, they get no attendance.

I wish I could understand what the Isles fans are chanting, they are ruthless. They have a major hate on for Tavares and the building is electric. It would be amazing to see the Leafs and Isles meet it the playoffs
-
The islanders crowd is insane tonight, literally and figuratively

Remember when Oilers fans were saying they would win a cup before us and would be facing A powerhouse matchup of Oilers v Leafs in a cup final? Lol!

@Pears they’re getting shelled by the leafs 4-1 early in the second. Leafs scoring fancy dancy goals on them... they’re going to get another top 3 pick and maybe first again. Sickening

JB better offer sheet Kasperi Kapenen. He's the winger Petey needs.
Up to 4.059 mil a second round pick
Up to 6.088 mil a first and a third. - Trade Sutter, Goldy and Prospect for a team likely to have a late first an get that extra first rounder - so we can bid up if needed and not give up our first
Leafs probably won't even be able to afford 4 mil for him and he's going to get 25 goals minimum this year. They are screwed.

My guess is someone in the east is going to offer Sheet Marner only to make their cap situation worse. Leafs will match, but that will put them in a bigger bind. Marner stated he wants to be a lifetime leaf, but his agent will tell him, wait to July 1, let someone offer sheet you and you will still be a lifetime leaf just with more money..

Looked at a couple of sites and the Nucks, based on probabilities have a 7-11% chance of making the playoffs. Inversely, they have an 89-93% of NOT making the playoffs. JB needs to realize this year is done and accept he needs to make trades to improve this team long term. The rebuild is not done by any means, and playing .500 hockey and thinking you're close is idiocy I'm sorry. And I am a supporter of JB.

1. Aquilini is not a dumb business man
2. The amount of sales from walk ups for 10 games doesn’t mean anything to him.
3. The vast majority of revenue is already booked given season tickets and tickets already sold
the basis of your comment doesn’t hold water, decisions are not being based on the peanuts from ten games of walk ups.

So you think they should be concerned about selling tickets for ten games (which would be walk ups only at this stage), vs looking to improve for the future? What kind of ridiculous nonsensical point is this? Is that how the team should make decisions? Really? As for whom, elder is skating, Tanev is not out for the season, gudbranson. This idea that many on here keep parroting about “injured players can’t be traded” is false. None of the names above are out long term / out for the season / playoffs. Injured players are easily traded for full value - they simply need the other team medical specialists to confirm the injuries are minor.

We are in position to draft 7th but also two points back of a playoff spot. Wow
-
@apollo love your enthusiasm bro but we are not a cup team yet.

I love what JB has done so far rebuilding this team, but his comments that he's not trading for futures at the deadline is concerning. This team is 1 game under .500 and as of today 25th in a 31 team league, and only 5 pts (if LA wins the game in hand) from 2nd to last and 5 wins ahead of being in last place in the entire league. I believe he may be thinking, with one more year this team will be 'good enough' to start turning the corner. He may be being blinded by the fact they are close to a playoff position (and ignoring how close we are to the bottom), but being this close to the playoffs is an aberration, the West is very weak this year. Being a few games over .500 is not a playoff team historically. I understand his desire to let the boys fight to make it in, but he also has to be objective and think longer term than just this year. I love this team, but we still have many holes and many players who will not be part of the long term solution / won't be here when we are ready. Not being a seller is repeating past mistakes. I am not saying tank, but you have to be open to moving players that may have value around the league if they aren't going to be part of the long term solution. If he doesn't try, I will give the JB bashers a point this year.

Ya, but making the playoffs this year in the west isn't 'success' its a result of mass suckage. JB can't be fooled by that, he needs to move players out for picks, but states he won't do that. I am bothered by it for the first time. I love JB but if he's allowing the fact .550 will get you in the playoffs "this year" to cloud his judgement, I am worried.

Duchene is absolutely worth the Canucks 1st, but it's not worth the Canucks' (or anyone's) time to spend an asset of that quality for him.
A later 1st with a good prospect? At least? Sure.
But y'all acting like he hasn't been a PPG+ player for the past 14 months on the worst team in the league.
