That's actually how the Habs got to draft Guy Lafleur.  Back when there wasn't a draft lottery, you knew what position you were going to draft in obviously.  The Habs from a prior deal owned the Golden Seals 1st round pick.  However, the Kings started out the season even worse than the soon to be departed Golden Seals.  Pollock being the crafty **** he was, made a one-sided trade with the Kings (in the Kings favor) on purpose so they would become a better team (and thus rise in the standings).  It worked as the Habs ended up with the 1st overall pick (Golden Seals pick).

To ruin a great story....it's hardly like the Habs would've been hurt that much with the 2nd overall pick - Marcel Dionne.....
