  1. One year off his career best and lead NSH forwards in scoring this is a bit surprising
  2. You mean .4 ppg in the AHL? Junior was way higher. He had 70 points in 60 points his last year in Kelowna. I vaguely remember Canucks fans salivating over this guy like with Madison Bowey. From what I read he is big, and doesn’t do anything well.
  3. He is a guy that should only get 1 x 2.5 but will get 5 x 5 because it’s free agency . Avoid.
  4. Bear is a far superior player to Luke. I love Luke but he bled chances last year and at this stage is more of a bottom pairing. Bear was very solid - he makes his linemates better and place a smart well rounded game. His defensive metrics were above average and he formed the #1 and #3 (with OEL) most effective pairing. He has decent defensive positioning and passes the puck well
  5. The Avs got a good 2nd line centre for 2x4, upgraded their 3C, and still managed to pick up a late first and solid prospect in the process. Incredible asset management
  6. Klim would be great. I'd love Yamamoto if we didn't have so many wingers.
  7. D | 5' 11" | 180 lb | Age: 23 Former 17th overall, plays LD & RD. Scoring 4 points in 9 games last season, +3 as well as 24 points in 39 games. Offer 1 year, $2.1M. We give up a 3rd round pick. Another potential RFA target with this kind of deal I wouldn't mind is Morgan Geekie.
  8. I loved watching Tryamkin play he was the highlight of that season. He looked massive, skated so well, and was very physical. As much I was against the Myers signing I was a bit excited to have another giant and I found him to be nothing like watching Tram play.
  9. Gillis left the cupboards bare because we had a team that competed for the cup and had home ice the following two years. After he knew the core was stale his final year the draft had two first round picks and Benning kicked things off with 6th overall and 24th (with other selections in place). Benning went: 2020 - no first / 2nd 2021 - 2nd only 2022 - 15th overall only (Allvin’s first draft) Burke wasn’t perfect, Gillis wasn’t perfect and Allvin isn’t / won’t be either but any of those 3 guys are miles ahead of Benning. Benning just made horrific signings and traded away more picks than he acquired over a stretch where we had one of the worst teams in the league. He then caps things off with the worst trade in team history. I would have more confidence in you or @Alflives as our GM over Benning.
  10. Better - a top 10 pick, 2nd, 7th >>> 2nd, 3rd, 4th. We have to pay 20 million to get rid of OEL Vs Philly paying 2.5 million to get rid of DeAngelo. PLUS Philly gets a prospect
  11. Moreso Brent Burns than Chatfield. Bear also had long Covid. Carolina thought Bear was too rich for the bottom pairing and with the addition of Burns it made sense to go with a cheaper, more pure defensive minded Chatfield on the right side. Bear is a 2nd pairing dman and a solid one at that. My hesitation is the cap commitment when he will be out the first half of the year
  12. Yea another great suggestion! I even saw Nashville writers proposing Johansen to Vancouver as he is need of a change of scenery. Garland for Carlo & Reilly would be another good one with Reilly in his last year. Garland for Geekie, Driedger + pick since Driedger’s contract ends and could be a decent temporary backup. Other targets: Brendan Dillon Matt Grzelcyk Tyler Johnson Shea Theodore Josh Bailey
  13. Myers and Beau coming off the books basically pays their replacements and the raises to FH and EP. We have some short term cap space - but we can’t go out and sign a guy for term. Paying for a with value guy with one year doesn’t make sense since we aren’t even a playoff team. Could we see something like Garland for Kuznetsov? Garland gets Washington close to $3m in cap relief for two years and production wise wasn’t that much lower. This frees up more cap for the Canucks when OEL’s buyout savings becomes less favourable
  14. If Reinbacher doesn’t make it to 11 I’d rather trade our pick to Nashville or Chicago to pick up an extra 2nd then take Willander at 15 or 17
  15. Hronek is a big special teams guy though, likely 6-7 minutes between PP and PK. OEL might get 2nd on either the PP or PK but I'd expect at least 5 minutes difference. Plus Hronek could always double shift with Hughes.
  16. He still plays over 20 minutes per game - probably dropp down to 16-18 before the press box
  17. He is an awesome bottom 6 guy with the craziest path to the NHL. Wanted him in Van but expected him to resign in EDM
  18. If he is willing to spend time in Abby as well on a one way contract for sure, not sure he is worth a roster spot
  19. His underlying numbers fell off a cliff last season. He went from a responsible defensively good 4th line player to a liability
  20. Whenever there was a player available and the narrative was “some GM is going to overpay for this guy” that GM was always Benning. Caps fans were like “Beagle is a warrior but some GM will way over pay him at like 3 years x 2 million and he isn’t worth that” then Benning gives him 4 x 3. Jets fans saying Myers is a 3rd pairing, his underlying stats were horrible, Benning is on it. Yet Hronek - nobody even really knows who he is. At first glance I thought we paid a lot for a smallish offensive defenseman yet when I dug in a little more he is likely the most underrated defenseman in the league. His defensive and PK metrics are more impressive than his offensive output and overall he was one of the top in the league. Bear is also hugely underrated - for some reason even Canucks fans can’t appreciate how good he is for the price. Allvin also did the difficult thing and sold our captain at a high. Horvat is a vastly overrated player who is making about 2 million per year too much on his next contract. Hronek >>> Horvat. This seems to be the proper way to retool. Allvin found a way to fill a bigger need, get a younger & cheaper player, acquire a very good near NHL ready prospect and a top 6 winger with a year remaining who can be moved at the deadline if we are out of the picture.
  21. He is actually a primarily defensive player and kills penalties. Does suck at faceoffs Jost’s Final Grades Getting a player like Jost on their roster for free was an absolute steal by general manager Kevyn Adams. A 25-year-old player with some significant upside still there is someone that will thrive on this Sabres team. Jost was a fantastic penalty-killing asset for Buffalo, and he was a spark plug for them on nights when the typical offensive talents were coming up flat. He put the puck in the net a total of seven times and finished the year with 25 points in 71 games. Those 25 points make this year the second-best point total he has had since the 2018-19 season with the Avalanche, and he has plenty more he can contribute. These would be his grades for the season: Scoring – B- Defense – B Playmaking – B Leadership – B+ Teamwork – A+
  22. “Why isn’t anybody taking Kole Lind” Even though Cody Glass was Benning’s guy, he still allowed the EP pick to happen. Also Gradin pushed for Nylander, the other scouts for Larkin, and Benning picked Virtanen yet in the same draft Benning wanted Bleakley at 24 but also threw Gradin under the bus for not pushing Pastrnak. In short - drafting is very complex and a total crap shoot. Benning definitely was more involved - although thankfully he trusted his scouts over making a decision to get his guy. This is why I don’t really care about who the GM is unless they do a complete overhaul of the scouting staff. I do wish we had Brackett though - he was the guy who found a lot of really good players for us. Post Keenan, I think Burke was our best GM. I would rank Allvin #2, Gillis #3, Nonis #4 & Benning #5. Nonis was pretty awful as well but at least Naslund’s contract was just 3 years and he did get Luongo. The most underrated free agent signing that never gets talked about is Samuelsson. He was the player that Loui Eriksson should have been - his defensive metrics were ridiculous and he scored 30 goals making $2.5M. Ehrhoff was also much better than I think we remember - he was one of the top dmen in the league. So the first half of Gillis was dynamite - the second half he made some blunders but diving again into the analytics Booth and Ballard (add Schroeder) played decent - they just didn’t get great ice time. Eriksson, Vey, Myers, Gagner, Gudbranson, Beagle, all came at pretty high costs and were awful despite getting some preferential ice time (Beagle played tough minutes but was terrible). As for Nonis - the Naslund signing was awful. Adjusted for today’s cap it would be over $12M and he was essentially an average 2nd liner - plus we passed on the Niedermayer brothers.
  23. GMs have very little to do with drafting. They have far too many other responsibilities. Scouting departments are massive. GMs can allocate budget and personnel but other than that outside of the top 10 they don't get involved. Benning did a good job promoting Brackett. But Gillis hired him. Delorme/Gradin have been around a long time. Benning also had much better drafts. Benning for example threw his scouts under the bus for drafting McCann, and traded him away shortly for Gudbranson. "He can move the puck, and he kind of came into his own this year in Florida… He can make a good first pass, he has a really hard shot, he can hammer it from the back end,”. That is not at all what we saw from Gudbranson. Gillis said the team was taking Larkin in 2014 and then Benning pushed to take Virtanen instead. Gradin, who has been money for us, finds Forsling and Benning trades him for Clendening who had serious skating issues. Gillis had a lot of whiffs, and missed out on players like Kyle Palmieri, Brandon Saad, Marcus Johnasson, Boone Jenner, Tanner Pearson, Tyler Myers, and Brady Skjei but other than Jensen picked the BPA. The drafts kinda sucked. Benning missed out on Larkin, Ehlers, Nylander, Fiala, Pastrnak, Tkachuk, Keller, Sergachev, Boldy - there was a tonne of legit talent taken soon after our draft choices. So the combination of better draft years, higher picks, and worse teams (easier for drafted players to get ice time) I think both regimes had pretty bad drafting because they were more or less, the same. David Nonis was GM during our best draft year (2004) and our worst (2007). It is a bit of a crapshoot. Fans evaluate a GM like drafting is 50% or 1/3 of their value but it is more along the lines of 5%. I was much more concerned with losing Brackett and our drafting going downthill than losing Benning and hiring Rutherford (who has a bad track record himself). One thing Allvin has done a fanstastic job at is acquiring good young players & prospects without giving up anything. His work restocking the cupboards has been incredible .
