Nucks fan in TO
Your list consists of many good defensemen, but they are not ELITE defensemen, except maybe for Doughty, who has SIZE (219 pounds!).
Moonshinefe
I love Hamhuis he's the most defensively gifted guy we have and is always there for us. He puts up a decent amount of points too given how defensively minded he is. We need guys like him and Tanev to cover our more "offensively adventurous" D-men to win the cup, period. I always can't help but thinking no Hamhuis in last year's finals was the single biggest blow to our team and was one of the major reasons we lost. Jai604
On that note, just how spoiled has Nashville been with defensemen? Cheers. TOML
Jai604
lol...yes, you don't need size as a defenseman if you are a Lidstrom. How many Lidstorm is there in the league? Or in the history of the NHL? Look at all the elite #1 defenseman, they all have one thing in common: SIZE. Pronger, Chara, Weber, Byfuglien.
Lychees
Not underrated for me, I knew how good he was in Nashville and just loved the fact MG picked him up.
NAILED-BY-THE-HAMMER
who would you compare hamhuis to currently playing or retired. he's kinda like chris phillips earlier in his career i believe that is a good comparison.
The Sedin's 6th Sense
The Hamhuis signing was the one that took Vancouver from being a good team to an "elite" team.
Nino
It's crazy to think how underrated he was when he played in Nashville. I love that we got him here and other teams pretty much just skipped over his name when looking at the FA's.
DollarAndADream
I completely forgive him for falling and turning over the puck leading to Stoll's OT Canuck eliminator. The guy is solid.
DownUndaCanuck
He had a brutal playoffs along with everyone else, but wasn't nearly as bad as Bieksa or Edler. This team needs more Hamhuises and less Bieksas and Ballards.

TheCammer
Hamhuis is a great defenceman and his biggest contribution other than his generally stellar defensive game is he makes Bieksa more effective. As partners it is clear they trust one another. Hamhuis stay at home style allows Bieksa to take more risks which has created the opportunity for more offensive contribution from him.
