From TSN: "The Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to announce on Sunday that captain Sidney Crosby has signed a 12-year $104.4 million contract extension"

Sidney Crosby will get closer to being a Penguin for life Sunday, according to a report from TSN's Darren Dreger.

The report via Dreger's Twitter feed said Crosby will sign a contract extension July 1 -- the first day he's allowed to -- worth up to $100 million, with an average annual value of close to $9 million.

Continued

According to the collective bargaining agreement, Crosby can't sign a new deal until the free agency period opens at noon ET on July 1 because he already is under contract for the 2012-13 season. That's the final season of the current five-year, $43.5 million contract he signed July 10, 2007. His current contract pays him $8.7 million annually.

Crosby's reported new contract will take effect starting with the 2013-14 season.

So far under his current contract the Penguins have won the Eastern Conference in 2008 and the Stanley Cup in 2009. Crosby also scored the overtime goal for Canada in the gold-medal game at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

In 434 career games Crosby has 223 goals and 386 assists for 609 points. However, he has played in only 23 regular-season games since the 2011 Winter Classic in Pittsburgh, when he was hit by Washington forward David Steckel. Crosby played in the Penguins' next game at Tampa Bay, but he was hit that night by Victor Hedman and was diagnosed with a concussion.

He missed the second half of the 2010-11 season and didn't start the 2011-12 season until Nov. 21, when he put up four points in a win against the New York Islanders. Crosby, though, played in only eight games before his symptoms returned and he was sidelined again.

He came back again March 15, when the Penguins played at Madison Square Garden. He played the final 14 games of the regular season and put up 25 points. He also had eight points while playing in all six Penguins playoff games.

If the rumours are true, Crosby at $9 million does seem like a lot at first, but after you look at it more, its an excellent price for him, especially locking him up throughout and beyond his prime. Big time money for a big time player - he deserves it.

...How much do you think Malkin will want when his contract is up?

I've always wondered about injuries. If a player can't play say after year 2 of contract, what happens? Is he insured?

No surprise here. In about 2-3 years time, 9 mill/yr will not be that staggering.

Crosby set the bar in Pittsburgh, no one including Malkin can ask for more.
