Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun is out indefinitely after a procedure Saturday to dissolve a blood clot in his pelvis.

The team said Vokoun left the ice at practice at Consol Energy Center after noticing swelling in his thigh. He was taken to the emergency room, where doctors diagnosed the blood clot.

The most important thing right now is Tomas' health and well-being," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "The clot was dissolved by the procedure, and the doctors tell us that he will remain in the hospital for several days. We will continue to monitor his progress after that."

There was no injury that led to the clot, according to Dr. Christopher Harner, the Penguins team physician.

Vokoun could not finish the 2005-06 season with the Nashville Predators and was diagnosed with pelvic thrombophlebitis, a rare blood condition that created a multitude of blood clots, according to The Associated Press. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic cleared him prior to the 2006-07 season.

Vokoun played 20 games last season, going 13-4-0 with a 2.45 goals-against average. He was 6-5 with a 2.10 GAA in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Get well soon Tomas!

The Red Wings Organization wishes Brent and David all the best in Colorado.

We are very pleased to add the group of young players that we did. A formal press release will be issued in the coming days.

In the meantime, the Wings are on the hunt for a top 4 dman. If you have a large contract defenseman on an expiring deal that you need to get rid of, contact me via PM. Otherwise, any teams looking to shuffle their d-core before the season kicks off should get in touch with the Wings.

MSG NEWS

Preseason Training Camp Edition:

With a week gone by in training camp word out of New York Rangers camp is that it is a tough competition this year for the few roster spots considered 'open'. With only 4 players cut from camp so far it is clear that the front office staff is giving every prospect a good look before final evaluations are made.

A few obvious situations have evolved however, The front line seems set with Vanek, Thornton and Iginla dominating every scrimmage they are tapped for. The middle six seem to be in a dogfight as the coaching staff appears to be running a 2a, 2b lineup in the preseason games we have seen so far. The middle six will be populated by Ryan Malone, Jiri Hudler, Matt Stajan, Mikael Backlund, and Shawn Mattias, but they have run a string of wingers through the last spot, one a day for a week now and the battle continues.

Jesse Joensu, Johan Larsson, Jeremy Welsh, Patrick Bordeleau, Adam Cracknell, Devante Smith-Pelly, Radek Dvorak, Carter Ashton, Max Shalunov, Carson McMillan and Cody Bass are each and every one working every day to secure a 4th line role, and almost every one of these guys has been tried out for 3rd line winger. This battle could go down to the final preseason game.

On Defense, things are much more aligned. Salo, Klein, Sbisa, Sekera, Stuart and Muzzin are locks for the top six, with injured Souray being among them when he returns to action in December or early January. All that means is there are two spots being actively auditioned for. Philip Larsen, Connor Murphy, Matt Bartkowski and Robert Bortuzzo are in the mix for those two spots and again it could come down to the last possible day of cuts.

GM Primal Optimist says in passing, "Happy to see that with six roster spots in contention, the battle and effort being pushed out by the teams prospects is the highest in years. This should be a good season for the club and its fans. We have sold out our season tickets threshold and game tickets are starting to get rare, buy early, buy often, and this week enter promo code "Playoff Push" and print your free footlong dog coupon when ordering tickets online."

On Philip Larsen, "You can't argue what we have seen out of Philip Larsen. I think Philip Larsen with another good performance cements a spot on the team. I think what he brings to the table is potentially a second unit power play guy who can spell some of the minutes that were filled by Sheldon Souray who led the club in PP minutes in his games with the club a year ago."
