[Speculation] Leafs shopping Dion Phaneuf

Recommended Posts

Paul Stastny is not a first line center at this point. He had 9 goals for the Avs in 40 games on the heels of seasons with 53 and 57 points. The Leafs don't need Stastny. Kadri deserves a shot at first line time with JVR and Kessel. Lupul, Bozak and Clarkson round out their top 6 nicely and Bolland can step into a top 6 role in case the injury bug strikes. I honestly think the Leafs should stand pat at this point. Just scale back Phaneuf's time a little and he becomes more effective.

Gotta laugh at the 'Stastny sucks' comments in this thread.

Stastny is being seriously under-rated here - his cap hit may be substantial, but he's also a young center who faced the strongest relative quality of competition on the Avalanche, got the lowest percentage of offensive zone starts (42.5% this season) on that club, and went 54% in the faceoff circle taking huge amounts of draws over the past three seasons - and he has been a 50-60 point player despite carrying that heavy defensive load.

No way in hell I'd give up Stastny for Phaneuf.

Phaneuf for Bouwmeester. That's about what makes sense.

Phaneuf is a cap dump.

The Leafs are in tight and have spent themselves into a corner.

They have no leverage whatsover to move Phaneuf - and Nonis has already admitted a month ago that he was shopping Phaneuf and receiving absolutely no interest - which comes as absoutely no surprise given the reality of the market.

10 million in cap space to re-sign Kadri, Franson and Gunnarsson. Yeah, the Leafs are definitely panicking....

Phaneuf is on the block because he probably won't be back after next year, not because the Leafs are in trouble financially. He'll get good value back in a deal, and trading him will continue to help Toronto retool their lineup.

You only consider Phaneuf a plug/cap dump because he's played for two teams you hate - Calgary and Toronto. If he played for any top team like Chicago, Detroit, or St. Louis you'd be saying the exact opposite.

Really, it's quite pathetic.

You forgot a few players - they're actually 6 roster spots short with 9.7, those three RFAs - excluding Komorov (who made 1.2 last year and really made a case for his value) and a few depth players.

Not as much space as you're implying.

Dion makes too much , but he i one tough hombre .. I met him after a game once and he had played with broken ribs .. Didnt think he had a great personality , but if I had broken ribs Id be whining like a baby .. If it were for a reasonable price hed be a great addition to any top 4 in the league ..
