Telus Exec: Canada Should Have World's Highest Wireless Rates, But Doesn't. We Should Be Celebrating.

Hmm, maybe check your bill statements? You're notified of price increases, guaranteed. Imagine the lawsuits otherwise, so just use a smidge of common sense. Or keep spreading misinformation. Why do people refuse to take personal responsibility for their own finances? Are you a grown up or a child?

No one is "forced" into a contract. In fact *gasp* you don't even HAVE to own a cellphone. You're not actually entitled to one - talk about First World Problems. Fun fact: the world functioned for at least several dozens of hours before the invention of cellphones. That's right, DOZENS of HOURS. It's a luxury item, and if you can't afford one, don't buy one.

Did anyone take a moment from their "rawr, big company = bad" outrage to consider WHY wireless costs in Canada *should* be higher? How about the sheer geographical distances and lack of population density. Just a thought. But let's just focus on one small excerpt and forget that maybe there's some context. It's the same crap so many of you, and the media, do with the Canucks. Same goes with the stats that get trotted out. So the big three in Canada own 94% of the Telecom industry. Let Verizon in and the big four will probably control 98%. So much better.

Verizon is also one of the companies that forwards user information to the NSA. And the Patriot Act is not restricted by national boundaries. Telus, in fact, took a case to the Supreme Court of Canada so that they would not have to give similar data to the Canadian government. And they won. But you should probably just hate them because "rawr, big company something something".

I'd be fine with the price they charged if it stopped at that. Without fail, every year I am charged at least one bogus overage due to THEIR error. After 3 hours with customer service, the manager invariably offers to credit SOME of the overbilling. The only way to get them to stop this is to threaten a lawsuit, and convince them you aren't bluffing.

The big 3 are borderline criminal organizations and should be treated at such. Welcome Verizon.

What's ironic about trumpeting Verizon here is that down in the US they're the juggernaut provider that everyone loves to hate.

Up here though, they'd do nothing but help lower prices and boost services. And unlike the other small providers we've had up here over the years, they could actually pull it off.

The timing of this 'our prices could be higher' and 'omg think of the nation!' talk is nothing short of hilarious. Can you say PANIC?

Canada is less dense as a country, yes, but it's also more urban on the whole. What, is Telus building towers for walruses?

And if they truly cared about Canada, the nation, then why are these companies all profiteering from it's people?

Yes, Verizon is just another big evil US corporation, but if they come up here and improve things across the board via competition among our own big evil corporations, bring it on.

Competition among business never hurt any customer.

Monopoly men crying foul over competition? Say it ain't so!

Bring it on! Nothing will make my switch to Verizon easier than those awful ads, either. Sorry, but I don't associate your pathetic brands with national identity.

I worked in cell phone sales for a few years, and that guy was purposely misleading you. He gets a larger bonus if he signs you up to a 3 year contract, than if you go with month to month or with a 1 year contract.

If you bring your own phone and sign up for a 1 year contract, you will typically get $5/month off the month to month rate, in lieu of a handset discount.

Anyone telling you that the major operators don't provide 1 or 2 year contracts is lying. Anyone telling you that you don't get an additional discount by bringing in your own phone is also lying. When you sign a contract you get either a discount on the phone or a discount on the rate plan.
