Islanders, What if..

Come on guys, the guy who started the thread is starting a pretty interesting discussion about one of the poorest managed teams in the league. Sure other teams have issues but the thread starter decided to focus on the prime example of poor management. It shouldn't be that difficult to discuss it instead of bringing up pittsburgh? Really, come on, let's try and be a little more respectful.

Yeah the Islanders had a lot of opportunities thrown out the window because of poor management. Perhaps worse than any other team ever has. The amount of talent that has gone elsewhere for little in return is unparalleled.

What if we didn't draft Patrick White lol

All joking aside, IF the Isles didn't make any errors, they could've won a cup or at least be contenders for a number of years.

The current Islanders team isn't bad. All they're missing is a #1 goalie and a #1 defenseman. Could that have been Chara and Luongo? Maybe..

Garth Snow is a very underrated GM, give him credit for the moves he made. The Boyes acquisition, Visnovsky, etc..

We can say what if all we want, truth is, every team has made significant errors at some point.

I really wish people would do their homework before they post because it makes you sound ignorant and out of date. If you were to post this maybe 10 years ago not knowing all the facts than it would have made some sense. Yes they missed the playoffs for 5 straight years but they also lead the league in injuries combined with a full rebuild and no money to spend. Before that the Isles made the playoffs 4 out of 5 years so they weren't that bad. The Panthers missed the playoffs for 12 straight years the Oilers for the last 7 years the Rangers for 7(97-04) and Columbus has only made the playoffs once in 13 years.

Had DiP been healthy he was an allstar and at 4.5 million per which was a much better cap hit than Luongo at 10 million only to choke when it matter most. Also you can't play the what if game because everybody looks foolish when history is looked upon in hindsight. Like what if Gillis didn't sign Luongo to a bad contract only to be stuck with him for the next 9 years. What if the GM had enough brains to fire the coach when it was obvious he lost the team. What if you took the time to study and actually understand the game of hockey enough to make a topic that wasn't outdated and inaccurate.

My favorite Canuck "what if" happened at the 1990 entry draft.

The had made it clear that they intended to take Petr Nedved with their second overall pick. The Flyers, who had the 4th pick were very high on Nedved and offered the Canucks Scott Mellanby to swap pick with them.

The Canucks declined and Philly chose Mike Ricci with their pick. One pick later, the Penguins chose Jaromir Jagr, who had fallen to 5th because of so-called "character issues".

So, the Canucks could have had, Jagr and Scott Mellanby instead of Petr Nedved.

To compound things a bit, the Canucks had a second pick in the first round that year, which they used to take Shawn Antoski. This one is mitigated because of his later trade for Naslund, however, it's interesting to note that Keith Tkachuk went to the Jets with the very next pick and immediately after that, the Devils took a pretty decent goaltender named Brodeur....

Woulda, coulda, shoulda....

Yeah, they've let a handful of franchise players slip through their hands, but they're loaded with young talent finally, and are going to be a difficult team to handle for years. I was extremely impressed with their performance against the Penguins in the first round this playoffs - from game 2 onward they really dominated Pittsburgh and were unfortunate to come out of that series without an upset.
