Watermelon
The Islanders have sucked for so long now and are just starting to get results after all these years. They had some of the stupidest Gm's and front office ever. They traded Luongo who later became one of the most dominant goalies for the next decade and drafted Rick. Instead they could've used that 1rst overall pick to get Heatly, Gaborik, Lunqvist and a lot of other players who had good or great careers. They lost Burt,Chara,Luongo, Mcabe, Spezza if they kept the 2nd overall pick and they could've had GAborik or Heatly instead of getting Dipietro. All of those players had great careers and were all-stars and had great careers.

HockeySpecialist
What if the Canucks didn't trade Neely? What if they traded for Gretzky? What if Bure stayed for his whole career? What if the Canucks chose Kopitar over Bourdon? Many team has what ifs..
Go Faulk Yourself
Every decision is easier to criticize in hindsight. At the time the decisions made they had no idea what they were giving away, and felt they were getting a better return for their team at that point and time. Drafting and scouting has improved amazingly in the last 10 years so trades like that probably won't happen again ever where they give away players of that calibre. D-Money
It was pretty much all Milbury. Snow hasn't done too bad, it's just taken him many years to undo all the damage done before, with a very limited budget.
DeltaSwede
Snow is underrated IMO. Milbury screwed the Islanders over monumentally during his tenure. I have always had a soft spot for the Islanders and I think they have become quite a capable team in the league. They have a lot of young up and comers as well and with that budget that Snow has to work with, it is remarkable that he can ice a team that can play the game. Hindsight is 20/20.. Go Faulk Yourself
Scouting has improved but that's a longshot. Drafts are still wildly inaccuracte. Prospects are still far from guarentees. And unseeable issues will continue to exist such as Yashin's decline and Dipietro's career derailed by injury. The Blue Jackets got the Vezina winner by trading a 2nd round pick. The Lock
Come on guys, the guy who started the thread is starting a pretty interesting discussion about one of the poorest managed teams in the league. Sure other teams have issues but the thread starter decided to focus on the prime example of poor management. It shouldn't be that difficult to discuss it instead of bringing up pittsburgh? Really, come on, let's try and be a little more respectful. Yeah the Islanders had a lot of opportunities thrown out the window because of poor management. Perhaps worse than any other team ever has. The amount of talent that has gone elsewhere for little in return is unparalleled.
Go Faulk Yourself
I think no matter how much scouting you do and how good the caliber of scouting is, trades involving high caliber players will still happen. Sometimes, It's about what you need now. Think of these situations as pressure mistakes. Short term, a trade may help your team yet longterm it burns you. Baka
Scouting and drafting has still improved heavily from what it once was though, I'm not saying it's perfect by any means, but it's a lot more accurate then before. There will always be players that will later be coined as steals whom were drafted in the later rounds, not because they at the time deserved to be drafted higher, but they pushed themselves to their limits after draft day and worked their ass off each and every day to get where they wanted to get to. Work ethic, coaching, trainers, that can make a huge difference what happens to certain players after they are drafted. Lets be honest, what goaltender has been extremely successful under the Flyers system of late? I can't name one goalie who has. Bryz is a clear example that their system is flawed, he was outstanding in PHX, and at times pretty solid in ANA, but in PHI he fell flat on his face. Bobrovsky wasn't all that bad in PHI honestly, I think they gave up on him pretty quickly.

darkpuncher
I really wish people would do their homework before they post because it makes you sound ignorant and out of date. If you were to post this maybe 10 years ago not knowing all the facts than it would have made some sense. Yes they missed the playoffs for 5 straight years but they also lead the league in injuries combined with a full rebuild and no money to spend. Before that the Isles made the playoffs 4 out of 5 years so they weren't that bad. The Panthers missed the playoffs for 12 straight years the Leafs for 9 years the Oilers for the last 7 years the Rangers for 7(97-04) and Columbus has only made the playoffs once in 13 years. Had DiP been healthy he was an allstar and at 4.5 million per which was a much better cap hit than Luongo at 10 million only to choke when it matter most. Also you can't play the what if game because everybody looks foolish when history is looked upon in hindsight. Like what if Gillis didn't sign Luongo to a bad contract only to be stuck with him for the next 9 years. What if the GM had enough brains to fire the coach when it was obvious he lost the team. What if you took the time to study and actually understand the game of hockey enough to make a topic that wasn't outdated and inaccurate.
