Vanilla - plain, simple game, usually featuring no more than a Sheriff, a Doc, maybe a Vig at most. There's no exact definition but basically something with few roles. Most games are not Vanilla. You can term them whatever you like, but they feature elaborate themes, multiple roles, etc. The 'Zodiac' games (now done twice) are simply one of these themes. There is fierce debate over which type is more fun. Some people believe vanilla games are, and some people are wrong. Link to comment

I think the faction that plays better overall is more likely to win in a vanilla setup than in a non-vanilla setup where there's more randomness involved in the outcome.
