Bo Horvat | #53 | C

Sestito looks slower and real awkward this season, more so than previous years. The only problem with losing the one and only tough guy on the team, could lead to teams beating on the more skilled guys on the team. Lots of scraps for Dorsett, I guess.

Between Dorsett, Kassian, Bieksa we have enough deterrents from cheap shots IMO. What we won't have is a boxing sideshow on skates that can barely play NHL hockey.

And honestly if the team feels the need part way through the season for a Sestito-like skill set, they can either recall Sestito, Archibald, Lain etc or sign/trade for plug. Waiving Sestito is not the loss some people are making it out to be.

Yeah, it would be no big deal. Wouldn't count against the cap. The player may not even mind it, as he'll be playing in his hometown, while still earning NHL dollars. Fans would probably enjoy that too.

Sestito has put up decent points in the AHL. So it would strengthen the farm team a fair bit as well.

To count towards their 9 games they need to be dressed. Scratched in the press box doesn't count.

Thanks,

I wonder if they only plan on giving him 9 games if they will sit him for 5 or 6 games to let him be around the team and practice with them longer before sending him back.

Really liking Bo Horvat so far. He's a guy that'll go unnoticed doing all the little things right. Could benefit playing with Richardson this year, not on the same line obviously.

Higgins Horvat Vey line sounds pretty damn good. Maybe even Kassian for the net presence. I think he deserves some regular season games, permitted he's proven worthy enough of them in the coaching staffs eyes.

Wow I think people really overestimate Richardson here (why am I surprise i'm on CDC after all)?.

Because Richardson was 55% on faceoff last since, you guys make him sound like he's better than Manny at it.

[...]

Bo always dominated the faceoff at the junior and there was a question mark whether he could translate that to the NHL, unlike Hodgson who wasn't able to do it, so far at 60% in preseason is a really good indication, specially going against couture the other night.

Nobody is making him sound better than Manny. Manny is clearly better and was one of the elite faceoff specialists in the game when he played for us.

The simple fact that is being stated is that, by virtue of not having anyone like Manny, Richardson ends up playing that role because he's the best on our team at it. It doesn't mean he's better than one of the best in the game - it just means he's better than everyone we have on our roster.

Against Calgary last night: Bo - 56%, Richardson - 67%

That's why he's not going anywhere - not because he's one of the best in the game - but because we have no one better than him so we can't afford to lose him and get even worse than we already are.

It's not an either or proposition. Keeping both of them makes us better than we already are too (assuming Bo can sustain this).

I didn't say it's either.

I was pointing out why Richardson is not expendable.

It might be worth keeping Bo around this year, since we have another hard-working 2-way vet center for him to work with and learn from in Richardson. He's probably the ideal guy to groom the defensive side of Horvat's game...at least, until the trade deadline.

I hope he keeps up his faceoff rate in the pre-season. He's been a monster in the dot. can anyone find the clip of him facing off with Monahan in the Canucks D-zone? He absolutely dominated. Got inside body positioning and broke Monahan's stick to win the puck back. He looked like the bull Shawn Matthias reportedly described him as.

He's being given pretty much 0 powerplay time and his only "top-6" linemate has been Nicklas Jensen. I'm not too surprised that he hasn't been able to produce/generate much. He's the go-to guy on the penalty kill which is obviously nice to see though.

True but he isn't creative enough offensively and I don't think he'll be able to improve that in the NHL. That's why I think junior is best for him, he's great defensively and NHL-ready there but we want more from a 9th overall not just a bottom 6 defensive reliable player. Horvat will take a while to hit his ceiling, he won't hit it at 22 or 23, these players take quite a bit of while to develop so don't hit panic but he needs to become better offensively.

Yeah, I'm not giving him a free ticket to a roster spot, but I am trying to point out that his lack of offense is almost by design given his role so far.

Plum has a good point. BUT. He has a mans body and a mans mind, why put him in Jr? He's already done that waltz. He's better off with the big club. Injury insurance if nothing else.

Because he won't get anything to develop his offence game in a bottom 6 role. He needs to become more creative offensively. Look at Logan Couture, he went back for 2 junior years after being drafted and he played in the AHL for a little while the next year. It's something I want to see from Horvat because top 6 two-way players take a while to develop.

It might not be the fastest way to develop a player like Horvat but it's a one that will get him to his full potential. Or the Bergeron way, play in the NHL 1 year after being drafted then AHL for a season.

He's not flashy but he's been making nice offensive plays. It'd be more pronounced with better/regular line mates IMO.

With Richardson possibly out he's all but guaranteed 9 games now I'd wager.

He's not going to be flashy but he doesn't generate many offensive plays.
