He had 11 points in 23 games with Chicago and 14pts in 17 games for Arizona before having a season ending injury. Market is changing - skipping the bridge and asking for top money right away. Setting the market rather high here. Teams are going to get caught at the cap much quicker. Hes signed to 7 years. ARI obviously scouted him, traded for him, and liked how he play. If he averages 60 points a season, the contract is worth it, considering the inflated salaries nowadays.
oldnews
The guy has 105 career NHL pts in 179 games and gets a 40+ million contract? Good young player, but wtf happened to earning terms like this? Career: 62.4% ozone starts (65.5% this year) 50.7% corsi (49.7 this year). 37.6% faceoffs .59 ppg Certainly has a nose for the puck - but I just can't see the reasoning/'analytics' in these massive and premature paydays. Next season they also have Chychrun starting a 4.6M x 6 year contract as well as Dvorak 4.45M x 6. Bolland comes off the books but they still have Hossa. Per CapFriendly they are at 74M already for 17 players.
-AJ-
He's young and has shown in the past two years that he's a fringe 1st line forward, so I can see the rationale, but I'd always be a bit concerned with such a long-term deal based on two years of production. RRypien37
It may not be the greatest place to live or a good team but damn if you are an NHLer looking for a huge payday, Arizona is heaven.

They are going to suck again.
