Ducharme mentioned that “he’s a young player that went through some ups and downs and he’s still learning.“

In other words, he doesn’t trust him, it would seem like.

I think a learning Romanov is still better than Merrill....by a margin....but I'm not accountable for losses, so I can't pretend to know what they 'should do' with their roster.

I guess they don't want to overdo the youth in the lineup in the playoffs - but again, if you're going with 20, 21 yr old centers, a rookie Caufield, maybe one Romanov doesn't break the camel's back - maybe it does.

And there is the point of getting him some experience / imo he's probably a future fixture on that blueline.

But whatever.  Maybe in game 5.  They're not playing assertive enough hockey - at least you can count on Romanov to step up.

If the Leafs get to the SCF I will root for the other team. Even if its the Bruins.

That side of the bracket is just a gauntlet.  Whoever gets out of that side is going to be beat up and broken down in the SCF, unless they can get through their opponents efficiently.  Tampa and Carolina having fits thus far and who would have thought that.

Nylander has been great for the leafs the last two playoffs.

He’s not a good defensive player but is a net positive to have for your team.

he's not that bad defensively - when he's not jumping out of the way of shots haha.

But credit to him - he's scoring without Tavares in the lineup - if anyone might have been expected to 'disappear' when Tavares went down, he'd be a good candidate.

He's had a bit of puck luck for sure as well - seeing eye goals, deflections of D - but it is what it is - he's producing.

He still needs to at least try to play like he cares in his own zone.  He's so lazy he needs a tourist visa to pass his own blueline.  When he's not scoring, he is hurting the team with his floating, especially with his abomination of a contract.  It also makes it harder to hold other players accountable when you let Nylander refuse to backcheck.

The hyperbole is always entertaining KHeffy.

But Nylander....

1) was 4th on the Leafs in takeaways - not easy to do when you're on a tourist visa

2) his on ice goals against 5 on 5 (2.0 per 60) is among the best of Leafs forwards (a few two way guys like Hyman, Mikheyev were lower..)

3) his on ice sv% was a pretty respectable .920....

He's certainly not going to get any grit points - never hits anyone and rarely blocks a shot - and a fair amount of his positive outcomes have to be co-credited to Tavares, but the numbers don't really suggest that he's floating and hurting his team....

I just don’t know how you (rightfully but extremely exaggerated) see Nylander as a negative defensively who coaches don’t hold accountable but can’t say the same about an even better example of poor accountability and laziness defensively in a guy like Wheeler.

One of them took a shot to the balls and one of them is scared of the puck and jumps out of the way.

If all that matters in a player’s defensive game is if they controller delete and if they make obvious poor judgement calls, JT Miller would be the worst defensive player in the league.

But he isn’t. He’s a player whose warts were shown when he was played out of position at center.

Is JT Miller a player you don’t want on your team because his defensive deficiencies were exacerbated playing at center? He controller deletes getting back on defense and his puck support/breakouts are terrible.

No. You absolutely want JT Miller because the good he does outweighs the bad and he plays at a level far above the salary he earns.

Wheeler is a bit of a hard/odd read - he's inconsistent.

He's actually 3rd among Jets forwards in blocked shots - and 3rd on that team in takeaways.

But he also has pretty poor 'possession' numbers -  poor goal metrics as well - gives up a lot 5 on 5....I

He can sure be a force when he's driven - with that north/south power game and nose for the net - but he's a bit of an 'upright' player / not always that 'dug in' (not sure how to describe him) - they'll need him to be more consistent imo like he was in the Coil series.

anyhow - here's hoping the real Leafs show up for the rest of this series.

Manny Malhotra seems to have hijacked that franchise.   Take a time out, Manny.

The one that got away, miss Manny
