Well, how many bottom teams have a Seike, Norris and Vezina candidate on their team at the same time?

Given that the bar here for Vezina candidate is Vezina votes once in four seasons (and 7th place that one time) I could probably come up with a number of teams in history that qualify at least as well as the Canucks do right now.

The bad LA Kings of the 1980s who always competed with us for last in the division had Mario Lessard, Dave Taylor and Larry Murphy for example.

How about the last two years then?
I talk about the best of respective player. Not the actual votes.
Are there any bottom team now that has anything like Petey Highes and Demko?

Of the other present bottom dwellers I can't think of any who don't fall short of at least one of those players at their positions.

Read something interesting today - if we miss the playoffs next year, maybe the year after, when do we look at trading Petey and Hughes and blowing it up?

I'd honestly say 2 more years without playoffs and it's over. Next year we really should make them but it's a competitive West and people will say Allvin hasn't had enough time to cook but if we miss them 2 years in a row then it's all over - blow it up big time and rebuild hard.

As crazy as that sounds it certainly could happen...

Pretty sure Petey, Hughes, Demko, Kuzmenko and Hronek will be on it. A Miller trade is not impossible but very unlikely. I agree the rest of the D is a big question mark. And I also agree that the Canucks could move out some of the forwards.

As bolded above; the core we build on. The other names added to build on to the core three. JR and PA's plan all along to make a contender starting with those 3 guys. I'm not saying everyone else is expendable, but ya' gotta think....yea. Perhaps they are. We certainly have a stockpile of forwards to bring in the pieces we require.

No. We don't. Our core three mentioned above will still be great players and far from out of their prime. We have already surrounded them with some players that will be part of the quest to contend. Yes, we still need more as mentioned ad nauseam in CDC; defence and forwards with size, physicality, PK specialists, stay at home punishing D-Men.......

It's my guess that this coming season, management will do what's required to get us back into the playoffs. With regards to all the talk of moving some of our pricier players, trades and such, it's my guess that when it's time to go after the Mark Stone's and Ryan O'Rielly's of the hockey world, management will do it. BUT not until after a season or two of playoffs. Then that's when we go for the throat!!!!

Yeah I think Allvin will be one of the most desperate GMs this TDL, no matter where we are, probably sell a 1st for a top player. Getting into the playoffs is our single mission right now and we're as desperate as a team like Tampa trying to extend their window.

But like I said...if we miss the playoffs next year and are well on the outside looking in again in 2024-2025 oh boy...I don't think Petey or Hughes would want to stick around, even if Petey signs a big deal with us, and rightly so. Bo was pretty happy to leave and get a taste of the playoffs and you know Demko will be well into his prime and wanting out if it's 2 seasons and counting.

Next year is early days, I could see us miss the playoffs just because of how stacked the West can shape up, but we have to be competitive. In 2 season's time though that's it for our young core if we're still a bottom feeder, and it's time for a huge fire sale and rebuild.

a. Three elite or near-elite forwards,

b. A potential Norris-trophy candidate D.

c. Another top pairing quality D.

d. A (we hope) elite goalie.

a. While elite wingers would certainly be nice, I feel we have elite centers in our top 6 and that helps offset the lack of very top talent on the wings. Look at the WCE line back in the day - do you think Morrison was elite? Nope. And he held the most important position on that line. Similarly, many believe an elite goalie is required (as you mentioned here), yet Hill is hardly an elite goalie. What you REALLY need is a goalie (and other players) who are clutch. Between Mikheyev, Kuzmenko, Boeser, Beuvillier and Garland, I feel we have enough players to fill the roles. Yes, it would be great to have higher end wingers but I don't really think it's the end of the world. Plus, if we start the season with these wingers, I would argue that one of them (probably Garland) gets pushed down to the 3rd line - which makes that position better than it typically would be from a typical 3rd liner.

b. What is considered a "candidate"? Top 5? Well, Hughes was the 3rd highest defenseman in scoring last year. Clearly, just scoring isn't enough to be a Norris candidate and he has size deficiencies, but I'd say he will indeed be a Norris candidate soon enough.

c. We all know D is an issue, but I believe it will be at least largely solved by puck drop. Hughes is amazing, and they brought in Hronek who they believe may be a #1 (though not Norris-level) in his own right. If they add another legit top 4 and then a complementary defensive-minded guy for Hughes, I think we start looking pretty darn good. Far better than before, if nothing else.

d. Do you not believe Demko to be elite? I think during the season shortened by Covid, he proved he can stand on his head and help the team win when they really have no right to.

So in short, yes, we need some pieces. No, we may not get ALL the pieces we want. But I think with the OEL buyout, if we can also move Myers, that gives us enough cap space to get pretty damn close.

Hopefully this super soft team with minimal playoff experience can bring home the cup in the next two years before we are backed into a corner and forced to make painful cap moves in 2025. Petey probably wont be very good when he is 26-27 years old anyways.

Yeah I think the posters who are trying to force everything for this year and next because they're afraid Petey will leave are incredibly short-sighted. I wouldn't want them running the team. It seems blatantly simple to me we should just be making good moves and exercise some patience and then let the chips fall where they may knowing we made intelligent calculated moves. What we shouldn't be doing is forcing ourselves to go through the pain we've been going through for the last 5 years due to impatient going for it every year strategy. Wait until you have a good team first, then go all in, not before.
