How many are they allowed?

I believe it is as many as they want BUT it is at least 11 as per the Coyotes.

The Coyotes have signed the following players to PTO agreements: Peter DiLiberatore (D) Olli Juolevi (D) Austin Strand (D) Hunter Drew (F) Ryan Dzingel (F) Patrick Harper (F) Cameron Hebig (F) Micah Miller (F) Austin Poganski (F) Colin Theisen (F) Reece Vitelli (F)

Jesus, how many PTO’s do they need?

The NHL requires teams to have 8 veterans in the preseason lineup. This is to prevent teams from loading up a preseason roster with just rookies and prospects and getting their face kicked in.

Carolina and Phoenix have a really young team despite having some veterans, their AHL squads are not flushed with NHL experience. So they are likely trying to fill out their preseason rosters with PTO's to meet requirements and protect both the key veterans from having to play too many preseason games while also protecting their rookies from getting spanked around.

The official verbiage in the CBA:

15.4 Exhibition Games.

(c) A Club shall be permitted to dress a minimum of eight (8) veterans for any Exhibition Game. For purposes of this Section 15.4(c), a veteran shall constitute either:

(1) a forward or defenseman who played in thirty (30) NHL Games during the previous season,

(2) a goaltender who either dressed in fifty (50) or more NHL Games or played in thirty (30) or more NHL Games in the previous season,

(3) a first round draft choice from the most recent year's Entry Draft, or

(4) any Player who has played one-hundred (100) or more career NHL Games.

Thanks, that was very informative!

Thanks for the info! Option 3 stuck out as a weird one to me. How is a 1st round draft pick from the most recent draft a veteran? Probably should have been listed as an exception rather an example.

Also saying "permitted to dress a minimum" rather than "required to dress a minimum" is weird language. But I don't write contracts so *shrug*.

Is he an upgrade over anyone we have?

Physical, defensive winger who can kill penalties and also burn a lot of time off the clock.  If you're trying hold onto a lead, put this guy out - he'll literally eat the puck.

I would pick him over guys like Dries, Studnicka and Aman.
