  1. Not minimizing it, it is a terrible act but most likely one committed when not in control of their faculties. He was sent for treatment not jail for a reason. You can blame people for their mental health problems which they rarely have control of if you want but that kind of behaviour is reprehensible.
  2. I don’t think reprehensible is the right word. Likely had a psychotic episode. Mental Health is a fragile complicated thing.
  3. I think it would probably have more of an effect in re-establishing an NHL middle class. The salary cap squeeze has been destroying mid-range contracts. The stars still demand ever increasing amounts of money and are getting it early leaving little for anyone not a star. Then again it could just exacerbate this trend.
  4. It is pretty amazing. Still in preprint and a lot of scepticism in the scientific community but if true, it uses common inexpensive materials and is a fairly simple process. There have been reports of independent reproduction of both the math and the process, though need to see more. But again, cheap and easy so reproduction and testing will be widespread quickly. In fact, if true, it will make a big difference in the post above. Superconductors will make tokamaks so much more efficient and potentially really help push fusion generators.
  5. Gets a chance to play in front of 5000 screaming fan. No other team in NHL or AHL can offer that.
  6. I think whether this is a good idea for Penguins is very debatable, personally I like it. The Leafs never won but they had Matthews, not Crosby. Just don’t know how this works with Letang. As far as value and price for a 101 point defending Norris trophy winner while dumping a bunch of Hextal’s garbage it is amazing value. Great deal for the Pens just maybe not a great idea. Good bit of GMing by Hughes. More assets an a rebuilding team. Using the relative financial might of the Habs to gain more pics. Weaponizing cap space. Good asset management.
  7. I don’t think we are behind on him but there was also a reason he dropped from prospective first overall to second round, the most important skill for the NHL now is skating. He is also 20 and likely needs another year or two of development. We need to stop rushing prospects. He could be a long term solution to middle six centre but not likely this year though our incredible lack of centre depth will likely necessitate some games in the NHL.
  8. That looks to be the path we are on. Feels like our best chance to be a cup contender will be when we trade away Q and EP and start a proper rebuild. Who knows what will happen. When you completely rebuild your D and are expecting every UFA you brought in to play higher up in the lineup then they ever have you are setting yourself up. We may be better we may be worse, I suspect it will look a lot like last 2 years just the lows won’t be as low and the highs won’t be as high. I also expect us to trade away next years first at or before the deadline independent of where we are in the standings
  9. Crazy if you don’t think one of the most intimidating PFs of this era will have value with so many old school GMs around. GMs have historically bent over backwards to try to acquire players like this even when their game starts to drop off. Toronto would give up massive assets for this player.
  10. He is a unicorn. Someone will pay to acquire for him even in a couple years.
  11. Not likely to finish 6th worst in the league but our chances of making the playoffs probably rank somewhere around there. Pretty much the middle of the league is a crap shoot. Who knows what Columbus, Winnipeg, Calgary, Nashville, Detroit, Buffalo, Minnesota and NYI are going to be. They could be competitive playoff teams or running for the basement. We fit in that group of “who knows?”, maybe it comes together maybe not. We could be as high as 3rd in our division,if Edmonton is really inconsistent again, or we could be comfortably near the bottom of the league.
  12. LA is way ahead of us. Never know, our October is really tough and our recent history is awful, historically awful, starts. If JTM and Thatcher Demko come in like they did last year our season is over before November and we are back to doing what terrible teams do, buying players at the deadline and trying to scrape out every point to move us into the top standings of non-playoff teams. Oh wait, that isn’t what terrible teams are supposed to do. We are the Mats Sundin Leafs. Stuck with a great player and no idea how to build a team around him. Every year we think we are one more move away from competing for a cup but are really barely competitive to make the playoffs.
  13. This was a player to avoid so he saved a couple Canadian team from themselves, good for him/them. It is taxes first and foremost, it the media or the pressure. These guys careers are short, need to put away as much as they can in that short period.
  14. Anyone who says they know how this team will do this year is likely a drunk alien. 3rd in division will be tough. Weird year, got the champs, an improving LA, Edmonton all well ahead of us on paper, a team that could be anything in Calgary but I suspect will implode, a team that played above their heads in Seattle and a couple bad teams in Anaheim and SJ. We fit somewhere in the middle of that group. Who knows how things will go. The first month will be really tough. I expect poor start, stabilizing to slightly sub 500 team until half-way or all star break then improvement to a slightly better than 500 team which ends up coming up short of playoffs. Same as last 2years but with less amplitude. So many things need to go right to do well. Demko needs to be late season Demko, not early season Demko, JTM needs to be late season JTM not early season JTM. Our cobbled together defence needs at least 2 of the new guys if not all three to step up a level they haven’t played consistently before. We need a third line centre and at least 2 less mini-wingers. Crazy crap shoot of a year.
  15. Would love that, think Hiogz will be the better player, maybe even this year. Need a partner though and nobody is buying $5M 5'8" wingers unless they are putting up major points. I was just saying that he probably can play third line in todays NHL because not likely a grind line anymore.
  16. Defensive specialist lines are mostly a thing of the past for good teams, defensive bottom sixes are a thing of the past for all teams. Most teams roll 3-4 lines that can produce offence. A third line offensive line with Garland is fine but not if with Dries and Beau. I really don't know how we can get away with having as many small wingers in the line up as we have. One or 2 fine but having a mini on every line is worrisome. Luckily our D looks a lot bigger now.
  17. And Benning did some of his best work that summer. The deals he signed Pettey and Quinn to were fantastic. Now he was boxed into a corner on salary cap (heard that one before) so it was pretty much a negotiation of this is what I have for the 2 of you, how do you want to split it.
  18. He said wanted to see what happened with new arena before signing. Indefinite residency at the Mullet and he says yes please. Why would a 19 year old want to spend his time on the ASU campus, hmm. Hope he has his HPV vaccinations.
  19. I hate golf but that outfit is sweet. Especially the hat. Looking good Brock!
  20. See if they will give us a second to take his LTIR deal. We won’t be accruing space this year and aren’t likely a playoff team anyway.
  21. Well since Pettey so far has not even made us a playoff contender that seems fair but very hopeful. This is not his fault, it was the inept management of Benning
  22. Add a million because centre, add a million for taxes and voila EP contract.
