Ballard seemed too small and weak against bigger guys in the western conference unfortunately.

He improved, but still seemed unsure of what to do with the puck at times. He likes to drive the play by entering the zone himself, which is not the way AV wants the system played. Ballard has exceptional speed and good hockey sense offensively, but struggles to get his shot through and his pass out of the zone isn't that impressive either. He plays physical and his hip check is one of the best in the NHL, but his physical tendencies have gotten him into numerous injuries.

He's getting older and his cap hit is A LOT for a guy who plays third pair minutes. Face it, he's told AV and MG that he can only play the left side well, and he's not going to getting past Edler or Hamhuis on the depth chart.

He hasn't produced at all in the last couple of seasons and his value is at all time low. This may be the only reason why MG keeps in on the team, however. He clearly has disappointed since he was the centrepiece of a trade that sent our first rounder (Howden!).

Ballard + Luongo will not give us a big return. Luongo's contract is seen as what's holding back his value, and now you want to tack on a salary dump along with Lu's contract?

Ballard, at this point, is worth someone who plays third pair minutes with a bit of an upside...which is what Ballard has shown over the past couple of seasons. A team would have to be really desperate on defense to take on his 4.2 million contract.

I think people are going to have to resign themselves to the idea that Ballard isn't likely to be going anywhere.

He still has three years left on his contract and Gillis has shown no willingness to "give" players away in order to dump salary. With Rome and Salo both being UFAs and Grags RFA status, the blueline is down to five guys who are under contract and Alberts and Edler are both up next year.

The situation could change if Gillis could somehow land Shultz and/or Garrison, (or acquire a top-4 guy in a Luongo deal) but as the situation currently sits, his hands are pretty much tied with respect to Ballard. We can all be hopeful that a team needs a defenseman and needs to get to the Cap floor, but as the saying goes, "If wishes were horses....."

It would still not be a big or physical line-up. If we get Schultz, and I hope we do, we need seriously to look at replacing Tanev with a much bigger specimin!

If Schultz lives up to expectations that is a very solid d lineup, basically a more experienced version of the 10-11 Canucks. Hopefully Salo can slot in for Tanev/Schultz and replace Rome, with Alberts taking Sulzer/Gragnani's old spot in the roster.
