Agreed though, not as high now, and the rating could change depending on whether Lu goes and what he goes for, or if he stays or gets cap dumped. Also dependent on whether the work out regimens to improve prove effective, in which case these roster changes may not have been necessary after all. Results should determine the success after all.

MG has no choice but to wait for the CBA to be settled. He can't make any deals until there is a new set of rules to work by.

Well there's still plenty of time before the offseason is over. Lots of time for MG to make us a better team.

Well, plan for it at least...

If MG managed to get Doan and somehow pry Weber out of Nashville then I'd give it a B+. But right now I'd give it a C. Added a solid top 4 D man in Garrison, re-signed Burrows and picked up some depth in Joslin, Mullen, and that other D prospect MG got.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

Tough audience. That would only deserve a B+?

If he pulled both of those things off, he would deserve a frikkin statue in front of the arena.

We have nothing to get Nash with... maybe Edler.

And there's something called the cap space.

So why's the offseason a C? Because your fantasies were not fulfilled?

Nash didn't want to play in Vancouver. End of Nash discussion.

Schultz wanted guaranteed top 4 minutes. Hamhuis Edler Bieksa Garrison say hello. Also MG/AV don't let the players run the team. (see Cody Hodgson)

Doan stayed loyal to the organization he has been with since day one. Even his wife, who wanted him to come play in BC, couldn't change his mind for him. You expect MG to?

Salo, is an amazing character, gave us everything he had and will be in the ROH. All that aside, he is still a 35+ d man who spends half the season on the IR and to boot he was offered a ridiculous contract by TBay. Is MG supposed to throw away the cap space he needs to keep us a threat for years to come so we can glorify Salo and keep him here? I thought this city wanted to challenge for a cup year in and year out?

Totally agree.

To the OP: I don't think we can evaluate the off season until Luongo is dealt.

I think the biggest mistake made was losing Rome, I think Alberts could have been traded/demoted to make room for Aaron. He was loved in the locker room by more than just AV, and played a better game than Alberts (and sometimes Ballard). He was serviceable for sure. Say what you will, but that Wario-looking bastard was pretty cool.

Losses: lost out on Doan, Nash, Schultz ; salo leaves....luongo stays??

I don't know if MG is waiting for more tweaking once the CBA is settled but is far I give the offseason a C ....

Re-evaluate your marking system. You are grading on material for which the "student" (Gillis) was not responsible for, and should not have been graded upon.

1.) Doan was, at best, a 50/50 chance to come here. He didn't sign for money, he signed where his heart was. If you want to blame someone for Doan not being here, blame Doan or the Coyotes for getting their ownership situation sorted out in time... sorta.

2.) From everything I've heard, Nash didn''t want to play here, so he wouldn't have agreed to a trade here. And even if he was okay with playing here, he was too damn expensive and he would have ruined the team's cap structure. And even if Nash was okay with playing here, what type of assets would the team have had to give up in order to acquire him in the first place, and what assests would the team have had to get rid of because they could not afford Nash and the pay increase for these other players (eg. Edler, Burrows, Higgins, Hansen). I'm okay with Nash not being here.

3.) Schultz did not want to play here. If he did want to play here, he would have signed here. He did not sign in Edmonton because of the money, which would be the same anywhere he went. He went to Edmonton because that was what Schultz wanted to do, and he felt it was best for his career. Any talk of him coming to Vancouver was a bargaining chip on his part to guarantee himself top-4 minutes. He was not going to get that from Vancouver. Edmonton said yes. Schultz signed with Edmonton.

So, do you believe Gillis should have lied to the kid and said, "Sure, we'll play you ahead of one of Bieksa, Edler, Hamhuis or whichever free-agent d-man we pick up" (Garrison wasn't signed until July 1. Schultz signed on June 30.)?

4.) It might have been nice to have Salo here, but not for the contract he got from TB. And even if he was okay giving Vancouver another home-town discount, when do the Canucks get to play their prospects? He's gone. Wish him well.

5.) Luongo will go in due time. New collective agreements, salaray caps and the like have stopped this process. When the labour issues have been resolved, Luongo will be moved. Why stress about something not happening now when we all know that it won't be addressed until a much later point in time?

So, as I see it:

Gains: Garrison and McEneny signed. Burrows resigned. A pretty good bunch of picks from the draft.

TBD: Luongo staying (for the now).

Losses: Salo leaves. Pipe dreams that some members of the fan base had for three free agents didn't pan out.

I see a lot more "+" than "-" here. I give it a B+ (an "A" will depend on just how good the result is from the assumed Luongo deal, and any additional UFA signings or trades).

regards,
G.
