At 16 yrs old...you're old enough to know what is right and what is wrong. She should be held accountable for her actions. Hopefully her parents have a good talking to her and she at least makes an attempt to clean the graffitti.

However, she is not deserving of receiving death threats and other tweets of violence towards her. No one should be.

It's young enough to make poor decisions on a regular basis. I'm not defending her actions, but a teenager who makes a poor decision doesn't deserve to be threatened on such a massive and public platform. It all creates such a ridiculous mob mentality that could easily escalate into violence.

Like someone else mentioned.. What's going to happen when this girl goes to school tomorrow? You could easily have a real mob of equally stupid teenagers capable of doing something much worse...

How stupid were you as a 16 year old? I knew I was smart enough and had good enough vision to see a memorial dedicated to a deceased individual, and not write bullsh*t on it.

Also, for those of you saying that Ryp would have not liked the treatment she's getting, just think for a moment: You did not know anything about Rick Rypien.

Although it is quite dumb to do this, people here need to relax, she's just a kid!! Burn her at the stake, throw a bag of poop at her, wow, like we all haven't done stupid things when we were young, right?

By the first picture posted, I see very little to be so offended about - at least like many are in this thread. Looking at the picture I've quoted below, if the person isn't a Canucks fan then why would she know anything about that being a memorial site? There are plenty of messages there but they could be mistaken for other graffiti if you didn't actually read them.

This is a bit of a non-story in my opinion, and certainly Rick wouldn't want to see us tearing this young girl apart over the internet for it as a part of his legacy.

Someone tried using nail-polish remover to wash Bieber messages. The end result? Lots of Rypien messages damaged, too.pic.twitter.com/dvQ4IXFu

Ok, so I have a question. It's pretty obvious hers wasn't the only Bieber graffiti there, since I can see at least two others in that picture. So why try and remove just the one? Did she do it? Why are we getting angry at one person? How much does this matter in the grand scheme of things?

Let's look at it from another angle just to play devil's advocate. Do you know enough about Rick Rypien to be able to say he would be ok with people blowing this way out of proportion and threatening her? Do you even know if Rick hadn't done some similarly stupid stuff at this girl's age? If he had, that would blow your "she should be smart enough to not write crap there" argument out of the water.

It's not a recognized memorial. It's a concrete pillar. And no, there are no plaques, or signs, denoting the wall as a memorial to Rick Rypien. If that were the case, sure I'd be more upset.

I'm not a Justin Bieber fan, but how is this any different from Canucks fans vandalizing city property by writing on the pillar, in the first place?

my understanding is this is just a spot where some random people wrote memorial messages about Rypien, is that correct? If so, what a bunch of tools getting upset about this.......even if it is a statue, or whatever, get over it, this is a complete non issue for anyone with any kind of life.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people who post on these forums know a great deal about the life of Rick Rypien.

You're really grasping at straws here. I'm not the one saying what Ryp would think. I'm just the one saying that using that as an argument is unfair; considering no one here knew him. Do the people that used that as an argument know he was going to commit suicide?

It's a tribute to the late Rick Rypien. What if something like that had been done for a family member of yours? Would you want teenage girls writing their crap all over it? Would you scold the people who made it because they defaced public property? I highly doubt it.

The people defending this girl are more pathetic than she is.

I will say there were others who defaced it as well. Putting all the hate on her is simply not fair.

Speaking of horrible arguments.

I disagree with your overall point though. Your blanket statement that we didn't know Rick Rypien is a generalization. There may be people here that have met him and possibly even knew him reasonably well. It's certainly arguable that you're presenting the point that he would have not thought that, nor done something similar at that age.

Let's put the statement in a different way: would the legacy left behind by Rypien (Mindcheck, support for depression and suicide, attention drawn to the concerns for a 4th line fighter, etc.) be supportive of attacking this 16 year old girl for writing "I <3 Beiber" graffiti on a concrete pillar that is already covered in other graffiti which wouldn't be infinitely obvious as an unofficial memorial site?

My point is putting hate on anyone is really counter-intuitive to what the legacy of Rypien is trying to do. It's not like it was a racist or homophobic slur. It didn't promote violence against women or pornography involving children. It was graffiti.

Was it a nice thing to do to write it there on the unofficial Rypien memorial? No, of course not. Should she be receiving death threats and have this be a leading news story? No to that too.

7 pages on this already, and there will be more still. We really need some hockey to watch.

No appology, she just deleted her account.

she just changed her twitter handle to @_simranmann and made it a protected account.
no deleting, she was getting close to death threats so I'd want to hide as well.
disgusting what she did though.

It's not hard to take a look and see what else is posted on this wall. I would. I'm not a part taker in any of these groups, so I'm strictly speaking for myself.

So, you're saying you would look to see what was already written on the wall before writing your graffiti. :o

But seriously, I'm glad you avoided the rest of my point. Let me try once more with a multiple choice question.

What would you say is most likely (please rank in order from 1-3):
A. Rypien would not want us to vilify this girl for writing graffiti where she did.
B. Rypien would not care one way or the other.
C. Rypien would be ok with the responses she's getting.

You're argument against people using how Rypien might feel (or how it would represent his legacy) is that neither A nor B would be ranked #1.

When I was 16 I was not stupid enough to deface a memorial....She was planning on doing it! Who carries a sharpie with them?!

But yes OTHERS deserve blame too, she was the only one dumb enough to write her full name

Perhaps she was hoping for an autograph somehow? I'd argue she certainly didn't plan on coming down and writing graffiti in that particular spot. Not everyone is as smart as those of us that wouldn't write graffiti at 16, otherwise this thread wouldn't exist. It happens. If it happened on any other concrete pillar, no one would have cared.
