Fallout 4 - needed a change of pace from COD & NHL, that and got the game from best buy  a year after it came out haha, for $29 on sale, didnt hirt the chance of trying it out.  This game has blown me away, the storyline, the insane amount of different characters,  the villains, the choices you make.  Love it so much, got a vault boy coffee cup!  8.5/10

pokemon moon

9/10

just beat the game recently, and it had probably the best and maybe darkest storyline since the original games, when it comes to the bad guys. i liiked how they went in a completely new direction with challenges, and your opponents, towards end game start getting really hard-- which you definitely need to play a little smarter, if you were like me and breezed through without being like level 70 going in the pokemon league XD my guys were mostly mid 50's and my strongest guy was 65 and the league gave me a hard time. the only thing keeping this game from being a perfect 10, is your "rival"/buddy is pretty annoying, but for the most part, every other character is very likable and the bad guys, are bad guys. the game gets pretty real near the end :x

i was hoping for the next game to top how awesome x/y was and i was pleasantly surprised with this one. right now going for shiny rowlets :3

pokemon alpha sapphire: 8.5/10

difficult to rate this game as you seem to get out of it what time you put in. lots to do, lots to collect, lots to improve on. but if you're like me and have a small pile of games to play, i find it difficult to really justify walking around in circles hoping to find new/better pokemon

that said, i did enjoy the game and i did get a lot of hours out of it (i think 45-50). but at the same time, the game has an extremely minimal story, no emotion, and it's very easy. i don't remember losing a single battle. i understand these games are often designed for younger gamers, but this was a little too easy, a little too basic. (edit: gets way harder in endgame content)

i'm still gonna go around and do some side quests and collect some more, but then i'm going to Zelda: Ocarina in Time 3ds

edit: after making this post i have continued to play this game and have clocked something like 72 hours, and i still have a few things i could do. not sure i will finish the game 100%, but given how much time i've spent on this, it definitely deserves a higher score than 7.

Not very new games by any stretch, but:

Super Mega Baseball: 8/10 - one of the best sports games I've played. It's super cartoony / arcadey, not realistic, so keep that in mind. The gameplay is super fun though and you can customize your roster with bonuses and play short, exhibition matches. I find the pitching especially fun, you can select from several pitch types and go at it. Good for a casual game! The developers are from BC as well.

Terraria: 7/10 - I'm sure somewhere in this thread it's been mentioned or people are familiar with it. It's very fun with friends though, but warning: it EATS time. I'm older now and rarely can sit more than a couple hours gaming without getting a bit bored, but this game is just one of those where you look at the time and it's like "holy $&!#, that was 4 hours." If you have plenty of time to spare though, it's a pretty fun adventure / world building game.

Overwatch 8 / 10 - definitely funner with friends. One of the best FPS class-based games out these days (although I have yet to try BF1--assuming that series is still class based). This would likely get a 9-9.5/10 from me being a massive Team Fortress 2 (and previous versions) fan for years and years and the games are similar, but I have a few criticisms.

1. The game was released with very few maps, so after playing for a couple of weeks you're stuck getting bored of the same few maps that tend to come up always. I realize this is getting better but a company like Blizz should've released with a couple dozen maps at least. It doesn't seem like it even has that still after it's been out for months.

2. I hate this trend where you have to use the company's servers only. This means you can't have custom maps, which is a big issue for some people (not me so much). More importantly though, you can't form communities as easily. If you find a server nearby in Vancouver like in TF2 say, and you play with the same people / voice with them over a few weeks, you can get new gaming friends far more easily. And sometimes you get groups of people you have more fun playing with vs. others.

3. Penalizing players for leaving non-competitive games. Why? Some people have families or pets or whatever, and that takes priority over a silly casual FPS game. So they need to weaken the penalties there. It's silly.

4. Missing loadouts. I realize this was a conscious design decision, but I definitely miss the TF2 style of things where you can pick a favourite class, but loadout different weapons and bonuses depending on the opponents you're up against. In Overwatch you can juggle classes (TF2 can as well), but it's less flexible.

But yeah, other than those things, the in-game physics are excellent and the combat is generally fun if the teams aren't lopsided.

i just finished Alpha Sapphire, do you think i would need to finish more in the series to appreciate Sun/Moon? i've beat Blue way back in the day. I was honestly just gonna move through them all in chronological order, but i think i should just jump to Sun/Moon to maybe grab gifts and stuff--assuming those exist or will continue to exist. I missed all the ORAS ones, and that's sorta lame

i thought i was bored/done with ORAS, but i keep playing it to fill out the dex. sh-ts addicting

Well sun/moon you can get a munchlax and the snorlax z power? As the gifts, or unless you're talking about the demo gifts, you should still be able to get those for sun/moon. Well worth it for ash greninja. ORAS were just a mega glailie I wanna say

You can jump straight in to sun/moon since AS has mega evolutions and you're introduced to those in x/y and sun/moon kinda feels like a reboot to the series. You don't have to really go in chronicolgical order but if you did, aftet beating blue, gold/silver are good sequels and Pearl/diamond are great then there's black/white and part 2 and then there's hope of diamond/pearl remake--  but the only thing you'd be missing out on are how some game mechanics changed as the years went on

Virginia

My favourite games over the last few years have been independent games (Firewatch, Papers Please!). Virginia had a lot of hype, but was incredibly polarizing among critics. I can see why.

There is no voiceover, no dialogue, just a beautiful soundtrack and a VERY Twin Peaks(ish) storyline. It is very confusing and leaves you questioning what you just "played". Because you really don't play this. The Lego games are more difficult than this. You can't die, can't lose, and have no choice. Just walk.

Long story short, I hated this game. The soundtrack is phenomenal, which is the only reason I would rate this higher than "Gone Home", which was the worst game I played last year.

Candyland: How on earth did this boardgame ever get famous. Its just the worst. If I wasn't playing a 4 year old I would have quit. But I can't let a 4 year old beat me so I showed her who who daddy is. Then I danced and gloated until she never wanted to play it again.

GAME: Hockey

FORMAT: Ice

VERSION: Men's

YEAR: 2012

MEMORABLE MOMENTS: Can't recall anything else from that night because it was the last night of my career. I'd already slowed down quite a bit by then from having knee surgery and ankle surgery in the Hat (the Tigers Ortho specialist did the surgery so I trusted him)...but I found myself on an offensive "rush" ...crossing the blueline with numbers I decided to power to the net. I dropped my right shoulder and made my cut only to meet up with a 220lb monster on D. He leaned heavy on my right side to prevent my move and then it happened...POP! There went my knee for the second time. I crashed into the end boards, had to be helped off the ice and driven to emergency. Thus ended a 46 year love affair playing the best game on earth...now I play NHL17...XBox One...(currently playing as Detroit...WTF!?!)

Uncharted 4

9/10

This game did everything right by me and it might be my new favorite. It had a good story that was well paced. There were no points where I lost interest or felt that I had to "power through" to get to the end. It has stunning visuals and diverse landscapes. I found myself stopping and looking around on many occasions. The gameplay was very intuitive and smooth. I never found myself frustrated by not being able to grab onto something that I should be able to or not jumping the way I tell him to. It felt very polished.

My only complaint is that the gameplay was a little repetitive; However, I barely noticed because I was enjoying everything else about it.

NBA2K17 - 9.5/10

My god this is the greatest sports game ever.  If only they could make a hockey game like this.  The MyCareer storymode this year is so well put together.  Even if you are not that big of a basketball fan this is still an enjoyable game.  You create a player coming out of highschool and about to choose one of 8 college programs.  Then you play about 5 games to try and win the NCAA championship after you'll be asked to join USA's national team for a game.  After each game your draft stock is re-evaluated until draft day.  You get drafted along with a 24yo point guard named Justice Young who then becomes your teammate/friend.  There are a ton of cut scenes everywhere from answering interviews during the game to selecting your shoe endorsements.  Once you and Justice start getting chemistry on the court you are able to take control of both players and are able to switch back and forth between them making this a unique playing experience.  I am currently 35 games into the season and have never had a better time playing a sports title.  The gameplay is awesome though a little daunting learning all the controls(there are three different pass buttons) and the it is a grind getting your player ratings up(although you could buy them with $$$).  You are unable to sim games atleast where I am at so far although you can just play half a game and it'll sim the rest.

A must have sports game.

Heard a lot of good things about this game, but my issue is the way you describe it, i wouldn't enjoy the career mode. For me, I want complete sandbox simulation, which means, no pre-made story (i.e. "Justice"), and no playing as anyone else aside from your own character (like the last FIFA game I tried, you took over the whole team once your player got subbed out) it's a complete immersion ruiner.. if I'm subbed, I shouldn't take any more part in the game. Give me the option to fast forward or watch the rest of the game simulated in front of me.

A good non sport example of this is the Warband games. You're just a lord in a living world, no pre made story, you choose to do as you wish and play a (small) part in the way the game world evolves.

I hear that, FWIW you don't need to play with Justice just ask to be traded to any team.  Never heard of the Warband games but that sounds like something I might enjoy.

Yeah I still enjoyed it but was certainly... different.

I get what the story is saying, and after reading the most valid theory:

Spoiler

That the boy was also, in some way, controlled by the weird "blob", to set it free.

So it's interesting. But still WAF.

I don't know why, but I felt this game was a bit too long, and the multiplayer was a bit hard to get into. I loved the first three games (2nd the best), but I really wish they didn't go back to a QTE boss. It was still a great game though.
