One, we already had Burke and we never made it out of the second round. Two, how do you know that Gillis didn't insist on Burke being canned before he signs off on the Luongo deal? That was my first thought, was Gillis on the phone with Tenenbaum or some big-shot: "I can do Luongo-for-Bozak+ but I won't do it unless Burkie gets canned."

I think there is something to this. I remember Burke playing pretty well between the pipes for the Canucks back in the day. He had a nickname back then... Sean, I think. We could use him as a solid back-up.

Burke has always been a terrible GM.

The ONLY thing he successfully managed was somehow convincing the media to build up a completely fake mythos around him.

The guy deserves none of the accolades that have constantly been showered down on him!

Hartford: missed the playoffs. Fired.

Vancouver: missed the playoffs 4 of 7 years. Drama drama drama, goalie graveyard, early exits in the 3 years they did make the playoffs. Fired.

Anaheim: handed a winner. They won. Missed the playoffs the next year, tinkered, dismantled a potential dynasty, and the team has never been the same since. He broke a contract to switch teams!!

Toronto: landed in the center of the universe. Had the money and the showcase venue to land amazing talent. All he got was a one nut one way wonderboy, played favorites with a derisive, completely over rated coach, and was fired.

I hope this guy never gets another job at any level in the NHL.

Which position do you propose Burke fills?

I bet he could score a bunch of goals with the sedins.

I'm really getting excited now! The lockout is over, the season is ready to start, and now Gillis has a golden chance to bring back some much needed front office experience to get us a Cup. I hope Gillis hurries up and snaps Burke up before someone else does!!! :)

Which roll exactly is he going to play? Enforcer on the 4th line?

Give Credit were is due. Brian Burke was a pretty good gm for us. That being said, we can only judge what he did, while he was with us, and looking at it, it really doesn't compare to what Gillis accomplished. But again, Burke did pick up some good players for us, through drafting.

Players Nikolaj Ehlers have been compared too by the fan base of the Vancouver Canucks.

BB can fill the gap that ryan kesler left in the second line. I hear Burke is a beast in the face-off circle!

Just don't hire him to be involved at all in drafting unless they need help pulling off a Sedin like flurry of moves. Other than that one draft success he has been so bad at drafting wherever he has been that it is almost tough to believe it is not on purpose.

The only real reason Burke failed to not win a cup here in Vancouver was because he signed Cloutier biggest mistake and only mistake.

Brian Burke http://en.wikipedia....ke_(ice_hockey)

Vancouver Canucks

In 1998, he became general manager of the Vancouver Canucks. With the Canucks, he was credited with reviving the ailing franchise and increasing attendance, with the drafting and signing of several key players such as Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin and Ryan Kesler, as the team won a playoff series and captured a division title. Following the 2003–04 NHL season, Canucks ownership chose not to renew Burke's contract for the GM position. Burke then briefly worked as an analyst for NHL games on both CBC and TSN.

It's weird that so many are revelling in Burke's firing as though he's a hack, when by all reports the Leafs' organization pressured him into making a lopsided trade for Lu and he refused. Maybe it's just something we should all keep in mind if we wind up celebrating the Raping of Toronto.

Honestly I think Burke would make a great scout or assistant GM. Something where he doesn't have the final say.
The guy has a good eye for talent - but his ego gets in the way of some of his decisions.

Don't y'all be forgetting that it was Brian Burke intervened in the suspension decision on Aaron Rome in the Finals, that's right the NHL let a disgruntled former employee of the Canucks weigh in on a major disciplinary decision involving the very franchise that once fired him and then brought him up on tampering for his tampering with the resigning the Sedins, so...there's also that.

He could be assistant GM until Gillis decides to step aside and hand him the full reigns.
