Hearing a lot of rumblings about the Penguins looking for a winger. Nothing close yet, but know that D Simon Despres can be had for the right price. Question becomes is that price a veteran winger with a short-term future or if the scouting staff has identified the next James Neal and now GM Ray Shero is set on trying to bring said player to Pittsburgh.

Despres and Yann Sauve played well together in major junior.

Booth+ for Despres+?

That could be a possibility, Booth fits the mold of Kunitz/Neal type. But then the Canucks may be too thin on the W although Kassian is looking so good.

Burrows - Kesler - Raymond is probably too weak of a 2nd line to win a cup...

Holy crap they're eyeing Kassian!!!

Don't do it MG! We need more Kassian's on this team, you can't trade away Kassian when we need more Kassian's!
That's foolish!

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

Canucks don't have wingers to spare right now, much less wingers who can score goals.

EDIT: a winger who can score goals is arguably our greatest need.

I could see the Pens get a guy like Stempniak from Calgary, could be a good stop gap until Bennett is ready.

I hope the GM of the Flames would know that by agreeing to any deal that involves giving Iggy away to Pittsburgh it would mean an instant cup for the Penguins with the possiblity of 1 or several repeats

Dupuis-Crosby-Iginla
Neal-Malkin-Kunitz

The rest of the line-up doesn't even matter because no one would be able to compete with that top 6

Not too sure how much there is in this rumour, since it's a blog post by someone only identified as 'Rossi'. Well, other than the Penguins are pretty much always looking for a winger.

Hahahaha. This made me laugh. 'Rossi'.

But in actuality he is often with the team and is a writer for the pens, albeit not a well-known one.

Could be a deadline deal where Iggy gets a shot at the cup and then resigns in Cgy again in the offseason.

Yeah, Iginla makes perfect sense. Especially if Pittsburgh is willing to part with a solid young player like Despres (and a 1st, likely). Pens have the cap room to do it without sending anyone back.

I didn't look very hard, but it wasn't immediately obvious who the guy was. My point about the Pens having been looking for a winger for several years now still stands, though.

If Flames management + ownership can finally succumb to the idea of re-building...

Although, I think they could get somebody with a higher ceiling than Despres and if the Pens had Iginla that 1st will be awfully late.

Two years ago, Calgary could have received a king's ransom for Iginla. Even last year, they could have expected a lot more than Despres and a late 1st.

However, this year could be different. Iggy's already showed signs of slowing last year - if he shows further signs as this compressed season wears on, that could bring down the price. Also, young players on ELC's are going to be at a premium right now, with the cap going down next season.

If Iginla is struggling at all, would you spend Conaughton and our 1st to rent him for one playoff run? Maybe...but would you spend even more?

Definitely, if the cap space is there.. Without blinking Connauton, a 1st and a 2nd in separate drafts.

Iginla on a competitive team in the playoffs? Come on! Plus his big cap hit is over this year and he is slowing down a bit, but he doesn't seem that close to retiring... so the Canucks or whoever would still be getting pre-July 1st negotiating rights as well. Iggy has 28 goals/49 points in 54 playoff games and would not be facing 1st pairings as a 2nd line winger here after the Sedins - Burrows/Kassian...

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian
Booth - Kesler - Iginla
Burrows

That's a cup contending top-6 if there ever was one.

Or Raymond, Connauton 1st.

Or Schroeder, Connauton, 1st.

Iginla is still at point where you take a risk & overpay to get him. Even as a player who is looking slow right now, without him the Flames would have no threats & he has 3 points/4 games.

Not to mention 67 last year, which is good for 27th in the league/2nd on the Canucks (albeit only cause Daniel was injured)...

He's a class act, with big pedigree and he's also a Canadian (esp.Albertan) icon with no cup getting late into his career. If the Canucks SOMEHOW or the Pens for that matter could add Iginla at the trade deadline, they'd be looking like the top dog.

There are so many benefits to adding Iginla for the Canucks, incl. having Kesler have less pressure on him to carry the 2nd line and play twice his fricking size and get injured every playoffs.

But I digress. This isn't a Canuck & Iginla thread..
