Do we have a back up goalie?

Well it looks like I'm in the minority once again but I say that as long as we have even a mathematical chance at a playoff spot we play Lack if only to temper him by fire, if you will, and give him a good taste of high intensity hockey to see how well he plays. If, once we are officially out, we don't see Markstrom I too will be a bit peeved. But I say wait until then. I'm thinking this blast of hard work will do Slack Eddie wonders come next season.

I got your back, Thema....Make sense to me.

The question isn't whether or not we have a back up goalie.

It is do we have a franchise goalie? And that answer is a resounding NO. Lack has been average at best, and that is not what the team needs.

It's been proven time and again that a team doesn't need a 'franchise goalie' to win a SC.

The season's pretty much over now, so it really doesn't matter whether they have a backup. It's pretty clear that Markstrom is not NHL ready, so Lack will have to play the remaining games. Huge learning curve for Eddie.

You can be sure that MG will bring in a solid goalie to share tending duties with Lack.

I know Torts had nothing to do with Schneider going, but he certainly escorted Luo out the door.

I wouldn't be so sure I have a feeling that GMMG and Lu had an agreement that he comes back to van make his case for team Canada and then after Olympics they would try to move him to Florida.

But i know nothing just seems odd that they wouldn't give him a single game after the Olympics esp since he only played 1 game over in Russia.

There are six games left in the season and no playoffs for the Canucks. There will be plenty of goaltenders available during the summer. I don't believe Markstrom will be the back up to start next season, no. I have a feeling Lack will be backing up Hiller or some other free agent signing. Gillis fans will be defending signing Hiller while his haters will be upset that it's a nine year contract with NMC. Gillis then tells the trolls to shut up or he'll name Hiller captain.

8 years is the max, no?

We should bring in Raycroft.

That's why I want us to be mathematically eliminated. Then we can shut Lack for the rest of the season and give Markstrom a look. We need to know how he stacks up so that, if need be, we can go out and get a capable 2nd goalie in the summer

I think we're getting one no matter what and Markstrom will be in Utica. It only makes sense to get a vetern type goalie help Lack mature. A guy like Halak or Hillier would make sense. Personally I think Halak would be a great choice. Shouldn't be overly pricey and he has history with Melanson. He's also used to being in a shared tandem in net and I could see him and Lack splitting time with Lack eventually getting the nod, or Halak could even be lights out with us.

Do you honestly think any of the top UFA goalies available are going to want to come anywhere near Vancouver after what has gone on the last 2-3 seasons...?!?!

Go have a look who's available...Miller, Hiller or Halak will tell their agents to not even bother picking up when Gillis calls...that leaves the likes of Dubnyk, Elliot, Bryzgalov, Emery, Gustavsson or one of the over 36 crowd that includes Brodeur, Thomas and Nabokov.

I see Miller signing in Anaheim if they don't resign Hiller and if he doesn't re-sign with the Ducks I see a team like NYI or even the Jets offering Hiller big $$/term. Halak I see as a fit in Wash. so they'll likely try and re-sign him.

So out of that 2nd tier who would you have the Canucks bring in..?

My point is that there are more starting goalies in the NHL than starting goaltender positions. Out of the list you mentioned, Gustavsson has had a good season in Detroit so he likely stays there. Maybe Mrazek becomes available. Ben Scrivens is now the starter for Edmonton when a year ago he was a throw in for Toronto in a deal to get a goaltender.

Vancouver's goalie circus has been bad, I agree, but they need work and the Canucks will have cap space for a goaltender who needs a job. Who realistically needs a starter right now? Calgary, the Islanders, Buffalo? There isn't any desirable location which needs help in net. The Islanders are a disaster, and have been for the better part of two decades. If Hiller signed with the Jets, that leave Pavelec without work and something to prove.

That being said, I think Lack has played well (just overplayed and wiped out right now), so maybe Brian Elliott comes in to split duties with Lack next year.
