Are the Canucks going to trade up in the draft?

Recommended Posts

So what are we giving up?

Unless we nosedive for the next 2-3 weeks it's unlikely we're drafting that high.

Benning by some rumours last draft seems to like the idea of drafting high talent BC boys though as per his trading up for Reinhardt rumours

I mean honestly it's not totally out of the question with all of the late climbers in this years draft that we could swing a trade to move up 5 to 7 spots.

But....what will it cost?

Our first, a guy like Horvat, maybe a roster player, maybe a prospect? Who knows

Good ol' bc boy (from Coquitlam) he seems like a jack of all trades type guy. I hear he is similar to Reinhart in that he thinks the game at a high level but has better skating ability, not bad size at 5'11-6' around 175lbs I hear he would only need one more year in junior before he's nhl ready. If the Canucks draft him I have to think they trade a center prospect in the future.

As a scouting GM, Benning has certainly scouted everyone in his draft range. Not just Barzal, who has fallen this year.

Barzal is alright, a local kid, but has been a bit perimeter since coming back from the knee. Not being talked about a lot as this can't-miss scorer anymore, for sure.

I highly doubt Benning trades up in the draft to select him. And trading up to select a legit guy like McEichel will cost more than what he has to offer.

Meanwhile, Benning, who's very high on McCann and Horvat up the middle, is heavily favouring drafting a defenseman, which makes sense.

I hope we move into the top-10, because there are some future star, big powerful first line centres in that mix. Eichel and McDavid will be well gone, but Barzal, Strome, Zacha and Mernier will go in the top-10 and will soon be the new era of centres in the NHL. Similar to the Crosby VS Thornton VS Backstrom VS Kopitar VS Getzlafs of todays era.

With our 15-17th-ish pick, we should try and move up into the 7-10th spot and nab someone like Strome. I'd be thinking McCann or Cassels plus our 16th overall pick plus Higgins for the 8th overall pick.

I hope he doesn't think McCann is a future first line center and comparable to the kids in this coming draft who are whooping him in the scoring race.

If we have the opportunity to trade McCann + our 1st for a top-10 pick and draft someone like Strome, we have to take it. That's essentially like getting a Kopitar or Getzlaf in your organisation who will be backed up by Horvat (a Ryan Kesler) down the middle for years to come.

I'd still personally like a defenseman in the draft over a centre, but if Barzal is available at the time of us drafting, barring we don't move up (and I REALLY doubt he will be), I'd take him in a heartbeat. If there was one other forward I'd really want in the draft, it'd be Konecny. He's small but he plays big, and has an amazing skillset. I think he's more skilled than that of Barzal, too.

He seems high on McCann, but so do a lot of people. McCann lately is playing as well as or better than Barzal, despite mono.

I don't think Strome is like Kopitar or Getzlaf, as he's pretty slow, but he could surprise. The only guys worth trading up for are Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel. Perhaps Noah Hanifin. And that isn't happening.

Rather than trading up, a costly idea, Benning should be trading for more. More 2015 picks. Take advantage of a deep draft.

I'm honestly not that high on Dylan Strome. I feel like he's not going to be as good as his likely position drafted will imply. I agree that it really isn't worth trading up given the likely price unless it's either McDavid or Eichel, which, well... Good luck with that.
