New Future Islands is just what I needed right now.

Their new album is out April 7th. Should be great.

Gonna have to go and re-listen to Singles for like the hundredth time.

Although I'm not a massive fan of all things Future Islands, this is my favourite song of theirs:

i've been listening to Kid A a lot lately for some reason. just in a Radiohead mood. i know it's not new, and i'm not saying anything new about it, but that album is seriously phenomenal. even the 'weird' stuff on there is just amazing to me. i think it may actually be my #1 of theirs - somehow beating out In Rainbows

also have been re-listening to Youth Lagoon's Year of Hibernation which I haven't listened to in YEARS. it's very same-y throughout, but great if you're in that mood

It's on the same level as OK Computer for me but yeah both those are among my all time favourites.

i loved both previous father john misty albums, but his new one (Pure Comedy) leaked and i could barely finish it. it's basically like listening to an extremely depressed man who has done too much LSD proselytize over some decent-i-guess baroque pop. i actually find his lyrics pretty interesting and engaging, but the music is DULL. i couldn't recite a chorus--i'm not even sure if there was even any? it almost sounds like FJM just singing off a series of essays or something.

an interesting listen, i guess. can't really imagine it becoming a favourite though

edit: just read a few other comments on another website and some people referred to some songs as being "catchy" and i'm completely dumbfounded. maybe i just wasn't in the mood, or one of those repeat-listen albums. either way, not really my thing after one listen -- but your own judge if you dig fjm

new album from The Shins out. outside of two or three of the singles I don't care for it much at all.

new Magnetic Fields out too, but i haven't listened yet (50 songs). really excited for that.

new shoegaze-lite band Jay Som getting some hype on the internet right now -- but the release bored me after one listen

Was it ever in doubt?

Here are the "Not released in 2017 Albums" that I bought in 2017:

Bee Gees

- Bee Gees' 1st

- Horizontal

- Idea

- Odessa

- Trafalgar

- Main Course

Aside from "Main Course", which is certainly a blend between funk/early disco, their early catalog is incredibly 1960 era Beatles inspired. So good.

Carly Simon

- No Secrets

- Hotcakes

Tom Tom Club

- Tom Tom Club

Honestly never heard a ton from their pre-disco albums. Really interesting to find out that they released about a half dozen albums before disco was even a thing. And all their stuff was heavy British envasion influenced. Was pleasantly surprised to hear their stuff and how terrific it actually is. Especially considering they were 17-19 years old when they broke out.

My daughter's going to see them in Berkeley in April...I've been listening to that lately too and wishing I was going with her.

just gave the new Jesus and Mary Chain a listen. it's totally mediocre overall. few decent moments. if only they hired a producer with experience with shoegaze/noise rock and didn't try to make it so.. clean? sounding, maybe it could have been better.

in my opinion, the vocals are too high in the mix. this puts WAY too much emphasis on the band's lyrics which are bad at worst, decent at best, and usually just sound like placeholders. the forced half-whisper/half-singing vocals get a bit exhausting over an hour too. there's a bit of diversity with the female vocals thrown in but how about instead of introducing new singers they just take the vocals down a bit and emphasize the thing they are known for? GUITAR

anyway, it's okay i guess. still might check them out in vancouver, but it'll just be out of curiosity rather than excitement

Trying to revive this thread lol.

New New Pornographers is nice. Especially like the first few songs - Play Money, Whiteout Conditions and High ticket attraction are all fun.

New Future Islands is alright but definitely nowhere near as good as Singles

Haven't checked out new Papa J Misty but haven't heard great things and that 75 minute run time is intimidating tbh.

Also those new Frank Ocean songs are fire.
