  1. I thought this was a really great analysis of Poolman found on reddit:
  2. Perhaps I'm scarred by how poorly so many of our drafted players from the CHL perform but I really hope he doesn't go to the QMJHL and goes straight to the AHL. He'll have higher levels of competition, get acclimated to BC, and he'll get direct instructions from the Canucks being so close. We also have so much more control over his development than if he goes to the QMJHL. Even if he plays minutes at the level that Pdokolzin was in his +1 draft year in the KHL, I'd prefer that to juniors.
  3. Although on the face of it the deal looks too long and too much money, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since it appears it was Shaw who targeted him. Shaw has done an impressive job with the D for the Blues and BJs, he may see Poolman as a particularly good fit for his system and having untapped potential.
  4. Can't find much footage or info about the guy other than his stats. I will say they appear kind of underwhelming but there's reason to project he'll be much better.
  5. I guess the reason I used that number is that he can be waived with no dead cap implications on our team. If he can play, he'll play. If not, no big deal.
  6. Wow. If that's what Risto is going for then I can only imagine what Schmidt would go for. With contract taken into consideration, I'd rather have Schmidt. If Schmidt could get us that I'd rather trade him and tank this next season. We'll have great cap space the following year to really build a competitive team.
  7. I don't see any loss in signing him to a 1.25 mil contract. Prior to concussions (not sure how he played after) he was imo better than Beagle.
  8. I mean there's only so many roster spots on the team though after picking up 30 players from expansion draft + whatever UFA pick ups they do. Lind seems like a reasonable candidate to make it through waivers that still has future potential. Even for us, it was going to be tough for him not to get waived and our forward depth will be worse than Seattle. We usually only keep 13 forwards: Miller Pete Boeser Pearson Horvat Hoglander Roussel Dickinson Podkolzin Motte Beagle Highmore Macewan Macewan is maybe the only player he beats out for us. Hopefully we can pick him back up on waivers. Also, Gadjovich is waiver eligible, we may need him to be our 13th forward or fear losing him on waivers.
  9. I can't really speak to the credibility of Sean Warren or how reliable he is.
  10. https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-top-10-prospects-hard-rock-jett-woos-got-underrated-offensive-talents-too
  11. I suspect Will pick is who he would pick at that spot aka his talent rankings. Gut pick is who he thinks will be picked at that spot.
  12. An indirect benefit we got is seeing how Pettersson and Hughes perform without having additional support prior to them signing their first non-elc contract. I have no doubt that Pettersson and Hughes would have both had much bigger contracts had Tanev and Toffoli stayed. For long-term stability for the team and being able to fill it with depth, it was good to expose Hughes and Pettersson with more challenge to see what they were made of. Hughes certainly got exposed more on his defensive game. Pettersson also didn't have a stellar year but it appears Miller may be the driver on the line. Our team seemed to have missed Miller more when he was away from the team than Pettersson.
  13. I'm glad we haven't. You know what some of the big names we've signed were? Barry Pederson, Mark Messier, Alex Mogilny, and Mats Sundin. We went nowhere with them. Big name trades haven't served this team well, I think the only debateable one is Luongo. We've had our best seasons where we traded for supplemental parts and made them better. There's no real shortcut to having to draft and develop your core instead of trading for it.
  14. I'd also probably take Eichel over Marner, Rantanen, Scheifle, Backstrom, and maybe Crosby at his current age. That puts him in the the top 10-15 range for forwards.
  15. I mostly remember him constantly icing the puck last playoffs.
  16. I get that list except Vrbata. Didn't he just have that one bad year?
  17. I get why he didn't get played this year. I didn't get the impression his play in the AHL warranted it. It was last year where it didn't make sense to me. He did play well in camp, he played well during his call-ups, he had great chemistry with Horvat, and despite what others are saying about him now, his D was average at worst back then. He was seen as a 2-way forward prior to the concussion. I'm not sure why people are saying he wasn't "gritty" enough for the bottom 6. Gaudette was less gritty than him and Virtanen as well unless he was on. I can't even say if it was a coaching conflict since they obviously worked together before in junior and in Utica with success. Honestly, one of the strangest line up decisions I've seen watching this team and I assume there was something else going on in the background.
  18. Looking forward to a future of: Miller Pete Boeser Pearson Horvat Podkolzin Motte 3C Hoglander Gadjovich Lind Lockwood Hughes Hamonic Joulevi Schmidt Rathbone Woo
  19. I'm no scouting expert and mostly just see point totals and stats. However, I've found we've drafted best when there were solid numbers behind the players we draft in the first round. Pettersson literally had unprecedented number for the Allvenskan when he was drafted. Hughes was about .75 ppg as a dman in the NCAA against men. It rare to have pre-draft players in the NCAA to begin with but Hughes was doing it and succeeding. Brock Boeser had the second highest point totals in the USHL his draft year (Kyle Connor was first). We've done poorly on players with poorer numbers in their draft year. Virtanen was only a ppg in the WHL pre-draft. In comparison, Guenter had about double his ppg. Joulevi only had a .75ppg in the OHL. Clarke and Lambos accomplished that in their D-2 season. It's just something I've noticed with our drafting.
  20. He's definitely not the same caliber of player. Guenther literally has double the PPG pace as Virtanen and Hayton at the same age and league while being defensively sound. Height wise they are also the same. I'm still shocked how highly ranked Virtanen was his draft year based on his numbers (not blaming Benning, everyone but Button basically had him a top 10 pick). I'm quite high on Guenther, the only issue I have is we are probably more stacked at RW than any other position. However, we should be drafting BPA first round so it shouldn't matter. Pick up the RHD and centres in the later rounds.
