Wonder how a revival of the WHA would do now. One ref with clear instructions not to do any game management, allow players to remove helmets prior to fights, and eliminate shootouts. I'd watch.

Now that goalie13 mentioned it, I wanna see what an XHL would look like:
- Goals from behind the 2-point arc (a crease that extends out to the faceoff dots) are worth double. Empty net goals are worth 0.5 goals. Goalie goals are worth 3 goals.
- Teams can elect to take a penalty shot instead of a powerplay, or a 2 on 0 penalty shot instead of a 5 on 3.
- Teams can substitute a skater for a second goalie at any point during the game, but cannot remove the second goalie once they enter the game.
- If a team commits more than three penalties in a game, the other team is awarded a super power play, where they can put an extra skater on the ice without pulling their goalie. This repeats for each additional penalty the offending team takes, with the number of extra skaters the other team can use increasing for each penalty.
- Deliberately passing or skating the puck out of the attacking zone in overtime results in a penalty shot.
- You can leave your feet to block a shot, but you cannot get back on your skates until play is blown dead or you leave the ice.
All these ideas are awful, but I want to see how teams would adapt to them.

@Brad Marchand - Your "If a team commits more than three penalties" rule reminds me of one of the beer leagues I played in. I think the rule was, if you commit more than 5 penalties, you forfeit the game. I remember being in one game once where the ref said, "just get them to take one more against you and we can all go home".
