(Discussion) Boston free agent Connor Clifton
Crabcakes replied to kenhodgejr's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Clifton is 28, too old I'd take Carlo to help them out with their cap issues. Maybe they'd swap us for Myers 50% retained..... nah! But I'd still make room for Carlo (26) -

Bergeron and Krejci probably retire this year which is going to mean re-tool. They have a pretty nice core besides and they have just re-upped Pasternak 8 x 11.25, McAvoy 8 x 9.5, Lindholm 8 x 6.5 and Zacha 4 x 4.75. They clearly have a plan for the future and you don't just pivot from that and rebuild. Jim Benning is long gone. They still have a gaping hole down the middle that has to be dealt with. They have no draft capital but there are plenty of attractive assets that they could deal.

Bergeron and Krejci probably retire this year is what people are thinking but look, Pasternak's new contract 8 x 11.25, McAvoy 8 x 9.5, Lindholm 8 x 6.5.... this does not look like a team who is planning on a rebuild. They're certainly going to need at least 1 top 6 centre though. Maybe they overpay for one

Not Edmonton talk radio? -
The argument that I heard today on 650 was that if they have designs on making the playoffs next year, and I think they do, if it isn't Miller, who's going to be the 2C? They need to add a centre and if they move one, they would have to add 2. This idea is just making a tough job nearly impossible. Besides, where do you find a point a game veteran who can play PK and PP? Also, does anybody really see one of our introverted superstars wearing a "C" next year? Miller isn't perfect but he would wear it proudly.

I don't like when the Habs come to town because they take over too but no, I don't hate them like the leafs. Overall, I'm indifferent to the Habs. I guess it's the whole leafs package that does it and the home stadium experience puts me over the top. FWIW, I never go to home games when the leafs or habs are in town.
-
I hate them because so many leaf fans arrive in our building and out number and cheer louder than the home fans. I get that Vancouverites, a lot of them, me included, tend to be more reserved at home games. It's also the media, sure they get too much coverage and so much of the media are clearly fans too. To be fair, in recent years, they have become aware of this and are trying to temper it. Also, we have to play our home games 3 hours earlier to cater to leaf fans in Ontario. This is an advantage that no other team receives. And then there's the typical leaf fan who is so absorbed in their team it borders on worship. It's not jealousy at all. I just roll my eyes and shake my head at leafs "nation" who idolizes a team to an obnoxious level who has been mediocre at best for decades.
-
The Leafs core is good, I just never felt they had the heart to win in the playoffs and it has been an issue in the past. Even in the regular season they often didn't have the will to come back in games from behind. Credit to Dubas for making deals to address this. He made a lot of deals at the TDL notably bringing in Schenn and O'Reilly (also Gustavson, McCabe, Lafferty, Acciari, Pillar). Giordano a year ago. Jarnkrok in free agency. A lot of tinkering around the edges which is something we're going to see here in Vancouver.

Schenn is pricing himself out of the Vancouver market. Allvin is looking carefully at Bear and Dermott as well. Since bottom pair D can be had for less than $1M why pay more?

FINAL Canucks "Top DAWG" Report under Tocchet - Just released.
Crabcakes replied to RU SERIOUS's topic in Canucks Talk
You're right. They can have highly skilled small guys but if they do, they've got to have bigger, tougher support players. So Garland (5-10, 165) and Beauvillier (5-11, 182) and all the other smurfs can move along. -

Nothing made me happier than to see the Leafs get spanked in game 1. All those frowning faces in the crowd just made me smile. Can't stand them and here's why: there are so many Leaf fans in Vancouver who have moved here and they come out of the woodwork when the Leafs are here to play. It seems there are more Leaf sweaters than Canucks and they are louder than Vancouverites. Also, Canadian media (although this is changing) seems to think that the Leafs are Canada's team; everybody's 2nd favorite; ABSOLUTELY NOT! I have nothing against Toronto people but I have a rule, never talk hockey with them. Otherwise they're nice people. The Oilers really get my hackles up too. This goes back to those cocky 80's teams who wouldn't try for 2 periods, let us get ahead maybe, then pot 5 quickies in 10 minutes in the 3rd and win easily going away. But it wasn't just that, it was their attitude in doing it. There was a new word invented and that was SMARMY. People who didn't live thru the 80's don't get it but I will never get over it. There was some morbid fascination at the Oilers over their bad years. Like watching a train wreck. But that is gone now. I hate the Kings but when matched against the Oilers, I'm cheering for them. The Flames elicit less strong feelings but ya, I hate them too. Something about Alberta? Maybe. The Habs? They invade our barn too and I don't like it but they're less obnoxious than Leaf fans. The Jets and the Sen's, I'm ambivalent about and will cheer for them.

How Adversely Affected Would NHL Be, If US Buck Tanks?
Crabcakes replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in General Hockey Discussion
You've got to be really careful what you believe because there are many who would love to destabilize the US in particular. The US$ is the world reserve currency. Many countries back their own currency with US$. If the US$ collapsed, it would mean world wide economic disaster. The good news is that it is extremely unlikely.
