Kane's decision to wait on signing his contract his looking really good now eh. Fack why are we not looking to trade for him??!!

But yeah great signing by CAR, Skinner is an unbelievable player, especially for a kid who looks like he's 12

while you could argue that this cap hit is a bit steep for skinner, it doesn't matter because carolina isn't a team that spends to the cap, and this ensures they keep one of their stars happy for a long time. small markets have to overpay their talent if they want to keep them, it's that simple.

5 million flat would have been more appropriate, especially with their other stars like the Staals and now Semin at such a high price.

I would definately say that Carolina now have the best, most playoff-ready top-6. Perfect mix of toughness and skill that Los Angeles and Boston used to cruise through the playoffs.

Both Staals are very tough, gritty playoff performers who both have Cup rings.

Jokinen and Rutuu are a good mix of toughness and skill, but much more even.

Semin and Skinner are purely skilled forwards.

That is a dangerous top-6 that will make some noise if they bust into the playoffs.

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes have rewarded forward Jeff Skinner with a six-year contract extension worth more than $34 million.

Skinner will earn $4.35 million for the 2013-14 season and $6 million for each of the following five years.

"Jeff is a cornerstone player for our team, and his long-term commitment to the Hurricanes is great news for our franchise and our fans," said Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford in a statement. "At 20 years old, he is still in the very early stages of his career, and we felt it was important to ensure he would be spending much more of it in Raleigh."

Skinner won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie for the 2010-11 season when he notched 31 goals and 32 assists for 63 points. He followed it up with 20 goals and 44 points in 64 games last season, missing 16 games because of a concussion.

The Hurricanes selected the Ontario native with the seventh overall pick of the 2010 draft. He has 107 points in his first 146 NHL games.

It's a bit much for Skinner, (More than Tavares....) but with the cap going up and just how contracts are now, it's too be expected. An overpayment for now, but I do think Skinner will be worth it. It's no stretch to think that Skinner will put 60+ points during the duration of his deal and there is still room for improvement so it should worth it for Carolina.

The thing is, Skinner now sets the standard for young, star RFAs. Players like Hall, Eberle and Seguin will be looking at 5.75 over 6 years as the minimum, and likely pushing into the 6 million per year range.
