Tortorella's Rant
Nonsense. He got equal minutes to three other Dmen on Florida. He certainly would not be on the top pairing on any team, except perhaps the abysmal Edmonton Dcore. (Scratch that. Smid, and both Schultzs, would be ahead of him, too.) The "Saint Ballard" hype is getting to be too much.

canuck73_3
Really? He averaged 36 points over the 5 seasons prior to coming to Vancouver. He played 246 straight games before arriving here. 28th and 27th in hits and blocks during his rookie season. 20 minutes a game. 21st and 20th in the 06-07 campaign. 22 minutes a game. 10th in both categories in the 07-08 campaign. 21 1/4 minutes a game 15th and 32nd in the 08-08 campaign. 22 1/2 minutes a game. 27th and 3rd in the 09-10 campaign. 22 minutes a game. So, basically he averaged 36 points a season, was in the top 30 in hits AND blocks in every season and averaged about 22 minutes a game over that span. A physical monster, a shot blocking beast and ALMOST a point every second game. That is most definitely a top pairing defenseman on most teams. Evidently we have wildly different views of what is considered a top pairing defensemen.
canuck73_3
So who do you think made the call to sit Ballard? That's what this is about.

Nino
AV, Bowness, Brown and MG, coaches and GM's have meetings. You seriously believe a $4.2M player sits without GM's approval?
wallstreetamigo
Gillis has said many times that he allows the coaching staff to coach and does not interfere with lineup stuff. Maybe he does behind the scenes, who knows? But if you guys seem to believe he is holier than thou along with AV, why would he lie publicly about it then? ANYTHING to deflect blame off AV for what are clearly his own decisions......

Smashian Kassian
People that are saying we should just trade Ballard obviously don't realize how bad this team would be with the D the way it is. We're lucky we played Calgary and weren't embarrassed icing that D. If we go with the same guys against San Jose, we're gonna get lit up unless Cory stands on his head. Provost
Ballard to Winnipeg for Antropov and a 3rd rounder... they need defence and someone who is signed to a little term since they can't get UFAs. We could use a centre, Antropov isn't great, but as a 3rd line guy for us could fit the role. His contract expires this summer so no downside when we need the cap space. Or make a bigger deal and send Raymond there as well for more in return.

canuck73_3
I agree, although he should go. We wont use him, might aswell move him and get something we can use, since AV isn't going anywhere unfortunately. Its best for him and he deserves that, plus when this defense fails and Ballard plays well elsewhere those of us who knew he had it in him can come on here and say "I told you so". canuck73_3
Thank You! Was just about to post this. MG has said before he lets people do there jobs, AV calls the shots on the line-up decisions, not MG.
snucks
Ballard was playing great, if anybody sat out it should have been Edler. I guess its like they say AV has his boys and if your not one then you might not play sometimes.
Nino
Every team runs roster changes by the GM you're foolish if you believe otherwise. It's not deflecting it's truth, MG may not propose roster changes but you better believe the coaching staff bounces ideas off him. The HBO 24/7 series is proof of that. That said we don't know who's call it was to scratch Ballard but you better believe AV at least ran it by MG before scratching a $4.2M player. Nino
He doesn't interfere that doesn't mean he's not included in the discussion, he may not approach AV with any ideas but he's involved in personnal decisions.
Smashian Kassian
You're overrating Ballard, we've done well without him before we'll do it again. You complain he doesn't get the ice time he deserves then say we'll miss him when he's gone. How can you miss someone who isn't "getting a fair shake"?
