[Report] Leafs, Kadri remain far apart in negotiations

Recommended Posts

Tell me about it, eh. I think they were simply stuck having to invite someone from the Leafs organization - Phaneuf doesn't belong anywhere near team Canada.

But regarding video replays, I can help them out with part of the reason they lost the lead at the last minute.... a pretty pathetic effort on the part of their captain...

Report: Kadri, Leafs talks remain unchanged:

A week ago, restricted free agent Nazem Kadri was frustrated with the stalled talks between his side and the Toronto Maple Leafs. We can only imagine how he must feel now after another week has passed without anything changing, based on TSN’s Darren Dreger’s report.

So with training camp rapidly approaching, it remains to be seen if the 22-year-old forward will be there after scoring 18 goals and 44 points in 48 games last season.

Kadri reportedly wants a six-year, $30 million contract, although he later denied that report before deciding to go quiet until the negotiations are over. Still, if he really wants anything close to that from an annual cap hit perspective, then the Toronto Maple Leafs are in a very difficult position.

They spent aggressively over the summer and consequently have just under $5 million in cap space left to sign Kadri and fellow restricted free agent Cody Franson. Keep in mind, Franson is also coming off a strong year where he tied for sixth among defensemen with 29 points in 45 games.

It will be a challenge to find a way to keep both of them under the cap, but there is still some time to make something work before the consequences of them remaining unsigned begin to stack.

While a holdout is fairly likely, imho there will be immense pressure on Nonis to get a deal done by camp. That means Kadri's gonna be paid and a body will have to be moved. Whether it's Franson or someone else, we'll see.

Rumours before last season ended were that Kessel will indeed be the one to be moved. (Nonis would've preferred to move Phaneuf, but no takers.) Nashville is still interested in Kessel. (They were the other party interested when Boston was moving him.) But if Nashville looks at how fat Kessel has become lately, they'd probably lose interest.

Leafs VP: ‘Plenty of money’ available for Kadri:

Another day, another development in the Nazem Kadri contract dispute.

On Tuesday, Leafs VP of hockey operations Dave Poulin said the club’s latest offer to Kadri is “fair” and has nothing to do with the fact Toronto’s roughly $5 million away from the salary cap ceiling.

“There’s plenty of money there for both of them [Kadri and fellow unsigned RFA Cody Franson],” Poulin said at Toronto’s charity golf tournament. “It’s not cap related.”

Kadri, who recently denied rumors he was asking for $30 million over six years, finished second on the team in scoring last year with 44 points in 48 games.

He’s admitted to being “a little frustrated” over the stalled negotiations and briefly decided to stop talking about the situation until it was resolved.

We say briefly, because Kadri was back discussing it again on Tuesday.

Toronto opens up camp in eight days and, according to Poulin, Kadri or Franson won’t participate without new deals in place.

What’s more, it doesn’t sound as though Toronto’s will let it affect negotiations.

“We believe it’s a fair offer. It’s representative of the body of work that he has done in his time here,” Poulin explained. “We’re in a good situation with that moving forward.”

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie13h

Kadri believed to be looking long-term (6 yrs in Tavares stratosphere of $5.5M per). Leafs want short, 2 yrs at P.K. Subban $ ($2.875M per).

Nazem Kadri@43_Kadri6h

@TSNBobMcKenzie false bobo

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie4h

BTW, no one asked, but "Bobo's" personal take on where Kadri negotiations with TOR are likely headed:

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie4h

As long as TOR holds firm on wanting 2 yr bridge deal, Kadri has no leverage other than witholding services and hoping his absence impacts.

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie4h

Failing that, Kadri makes case for closer to Matt Duchene $ ($3.5M per) than P.K. Subban $ ($2.875M per). We'll see if TOR moves off that #.

Surprised no one posted this exchange lol.

You guys are fools if you think Toronto is in trouble: Nonis holds ALL the cards right now in the Kadri situation.

Kadri can't afford to hold out because Toronto has signed and traded for some serious players that will quickly take his roster spot. As a player who has yet to prove himself in a 82-game season, it would be in his best interest NOT to miss training camp so that he gives himself the best chance to earn big $$$ in the upcoming years.

The only thing that Kadri could do is sign an offer sheet, if there is one for him. Somehow I doubt that.

I think most people think Toronto is in trouble because they don't have enough to sign Kadri and Franson, two players imo, where key reasons they made the playoffs last year. Signing one, likely leads to losing the other. Without their offense on a lot of nights Toronto would have lost those games where neither team iced an nhl goalie.

And I agree Kadri needs to suck it up and signa bridge contract then he can get a huge pay day either from the Leafs or on the open market
