Fred65
On Defense we have Edler for another 5 years, Garrison for a further 4 years, Bieska and Hamhuis for 3 more. Stanton will be re-signed. Tanev will be resigned as will Corrado. Frankly we're covered at the back end with 7 quality D for a number of years. Prospects We have McNally, Anderson, Tommerness & McEnemy in the wings...one maybe 2 will surely make it. I admit we don't have any with a growl in their play maybe Blaine In goal we have Lack and Ericksson plus Cannata Forwards we have the obvious Horvat, Gaunce ( play wing or centre) Shikaruk and Jensen on wing, and then maybe Grenier and Archibald. IMO we're deeper than we've ever been

thad
I'd go for the dman this time around unless a guy falls into our lap(shinkaruk style)... I won't be heartbroken if they go for another forward though as we've pulled dmen out of our ass lately. Whether it's intriguing late rounders like McNally subban cederholm or corrado.. Or off the board guys like Tanev Stanton. We seem to be able to find good D prospects out of the high profile ranks these days but it would be nice to get excited like we were with bourdon again. canucklax
My only issue with those boys is ther is no genuine beef monster on the back end to clear the crease. What happens if we run into a team with a Byfuglien to sit on Luongo again? My issue with Ho Sang is his size. We have no point of reference but by all accounts his family are not large people. With Subban we have verifiable proof that he will almost certainly hit a growth spurt as has happened with both of his brothers who were drafted at a comparable size as Jordan but both shot up in size and thickness. I worry about Ho Sang the same way I worried about and still do worry about Schroeder A lot of smaller ("smaller") D men make the NHL and do pretty well as long as they're mobile. Duncan Keith is tall but by no means big, his bread and butter is being so evasive that he is almost never hit. Honka is going to be a PMD star in this league at some point and his actual size is close to that of Ehrhoff and or Green. He still has time to grow and fill out and will have some serious talent to grow with in Utica. You're contradicting yourself. Honka has great offensive upside, but his family working for willy wonka, and his lack of a solid defensive game make me see him as a 2nd round pick. Too many risks to take in the top

Warhippy
Honka is a full axe handle wider and thicker than Ho Sang. ho Sang has speed to spare and decent hands, but he looks like a poor mans Richard Park. Honka is a solid skater, great passer has a sweet wrist shot and might indeed fall into the 2nd round, but of the top 60 players and the D available in this draft, Honka is one of the better skaters, scorers AND has one of the better +/- of the blue liners. Hard not to like him at all. especially knowing Dal Colle Ritchie Tuch and Kapanen will all be gone by the time we pick unless we slide in the standings. Added guys like Collins, Vanier and Mantha have the size to at least step into a role quickly in the league regardless of development

Silfverberg Snipes
We have enough third line grinders and shut down defenseman to satisfy the defensive aspect of the game. But how many players have you seen that are NHL ready when your draft position is between 19-30 pick in the first round? The closest NhL ready player that the Canucks drafted was Kesler in 03' and that was at the 23rd position. And even then it took him at least 2 years before he made it to the big club. Fair enough, I just don't want to see anymore safe picks ALA Horvat and Gaunce. We need some raw talent on our roster to spark the offense. If two or three years is what it takes for that pick to develop then so be it.
Southpop45
when drafting you always follow the golden rule: take the best player available. never ever draft based on positional need it almost always comes back to bite you. it seems that people on the boards want the canucks to take a defence-men in the first round. however if there is a better forward or goalie available then you take that player and worry about positional need later. Hamhuis and Edler trade bait...where did that come from, they're both entering their prime. I agree we don't have a name PMD other than Edler in the last full season was anked 7th over all in the league for points, he's not exactly chopped liver. I think local fans never give enough credit for their own players and tend to dwell on negatives ( me at times included ) I'd have to say I would rank our defense now and in years to come a pretty solid group that other teams would only dream they had. Quality from 1 to 6 plus a pretty good #7 in Corrado. Now meaness I think we're short of on the blue line and that counts. On wing maybe 1.5 blue chippers Shinkaruk plus a maybe Jensen. So I agree likely a winger would be a good selection. I liked MG draft last year a solid top end forward in Horvat and with that in his pocket he took a bit of a gamble for a small and skilled Shinkaruk. I liked that! Centre seems to now be our strong point, volume and skill Goal looks to be covered with a little depth in hand. But saying that, we're not selecting a team at the draft we're building an organization and they will take the best player according to their scouting list. There maybe a little flim flam from Gillis to the fans after the selection.....but we all knows it's BS to molify the fans no more no less. You know what they say about lawyers, when can you tell a lawyer in lying...his mouths moving
Magikal
If he have a mid round 1st I would ideally go for one of the following: Leon Draisaitl - Playmaker with great hockey sense, soft hands, good size (6ft2, 200lbs) and roughly a PPG average in the WHL since coming over from Germany. We definitely need more pass first guys in the top 6. After Henrik there really isn't much in terms of bonafide top 6 players who pass first. Jared McCann - Two way player. Again another hockey smart guy and just shy of a PPG average in the OHL (.85PPG). Decent size (6ft 180lbs) and has a solid shot to him. Seems like a Canadian Kesler and that's not bad at all. DeAngelo and Honka have some interesting skill but they are too small for the kind of D we really need. If we have a late round pick: Nikita Scherbak - I normally prefer to avoid drafting Russians but this guy is ripping up the WHL as a rookie right now and his offensive abilities are pretty impressive. But, as long as there is the KHL, drafting Russians is risky business. THe kid can shoot though. Decent size at 6ft 170lbs. Not bad at 17. Alex Nedeljkovic - Not the biggest goalie at 6ft 200lbs but he has great sv% numbers and GAA isn't shabby at all. Cannata, Lack and Eriksson are good to have but more goalie prospects never hurts and keeps them battling. Adam Mattsson & Joshua Jacobs - I don't much about these guys other then they are big d-men. We need a big stay at home kind of guy on our blue line but I don't know enough about these guys to say which (if either) should be targeted by Vancouver. Warhippy
There hasn't been much riase and fall as of yet but of note again are Ryan Mantha, Adam Ollatts Mattsson, Ryan Collins, Alexis Vanier all on D. I do not think Honka will fall to us but there's more than enough draft action to go around. remembering organizational needs right now flow around D and RW.
