Mike Gillis's downfall was trusting the wrong person!

Mike Gillis was the best GM for awhile but quickly became a regular GM with no respect, why? because he trusted Alain Vingeault way too much!

When Gillis was hired in 2008, it was a shocker because nobody knew who he was up until that point but being Bure and Naslund's former agent. Everybody thought AV was going to be canned but AV impressed Gillis so much because AV pretty much blamed Nonis for all his troubles (hence putting Byron Ritchie on the point on the power play) but AV convinced Gillis that he wasn't the problem. Gillis awarded AV by giving him a second chance (unproven coach). Tortorella and Quenivlle were available that coming summer. AV was one game away of getting fired before Alex Burrows saved his job by scoring a late short handed goal against the Carolina Hurricanes in January 2009. The win erased an eight game losing streak. Canucks were 13 points behind the Calgary Flames that was led by Mikka, Iginla, Dion, Regher and Conroy. The Canucks never looked back annd went from 13th place in the conference to third place in the west by winning the division. Since that day of beating the Carolina Hurricanes the canucks have recorded the most points in NHL in the regular season since that day.

He had two chances to fire AV before he did his damage to the team. AV was always a players coach but he had a lot of his players in the doghouse and players that left Vancouver hating him and thus hating Vancouver management. Here are all the players he mistreated.

1) Mats Sundin - I don't care what people say about him but the day Gillis offered Mats Sundin his contract was the day the Canucks became a contender to the Stanley Cup and the rest of the league took notice..that the Canucks were a serious player! Futue hall of famer and taking Canada's captain away from them (the leafs) was a huge statement. But AV failed to recongnize that and ended up having a premature retirement. I don't care what anybody says, Mats Sundin was just starting to find his groove in the play offs when we got eliminated by Chi-town.

2) Trevor Linden-I think this guy is the most overrated player in nhl history because of canuck fans but the way he treated him in his last year PRE gillis was a shame, Linden played his best hockey in 2007 play offs after being reaquired in 2001 but AV pretty much made him a healthy scratch the following season by playing guys Ritchie over him. AV pretty much made the decsion to retire him.

3) Markus Naslund- one of the greatest canucks of all time, never gave him the opportunity to do anything. It was sad to see this legend fall.

4) Ryan Johnson - foot soldier on the pk and reliable player but AV disrespected him big time and Johnson had some choice words to say about canucks when he was a blackhawk in 2011 play offs.

5) Michael Grabner- LOL AV pretty much picked Raymond over this guy. just because Raymond was an AV guy. There's a reason why gillis got rid of raymond as soon as he fired AV.

6) Cody Hodgon- Poor kid never had a chance with this guy. Openly criticized Hodgsons pre season play in 2009. Only to find out that our own doctors didnt detect his injury and some hicktown in Ontario doctor's clinic revealed that he had an injured back. AV never apologised to Cody and that relationship w the canucks was never the same again. AV is 50 years old and Hodgson was a teenager but AV acted like the kid and never got over it that he was wrong. It pretty much cost us the first round against the kings that year when he got traded.

7) Willie Mitchell/Ballard - Told Gillis that this guy was done and ended up getting Ballard. Who soon became his whipping boy

8)Kyle Wellwood- Had some choice words to say about canucks management after he left to San Jose.

I havent mentioned and wont get into with the other guys he pissed off, like Matthieu Schiedner, Aaron Miller

Imagine the ripple effects if we did what we did this summer 4 years ago.

1) Hodgson and Ballard aren't treated like s***

2) We give Chicago a tough time, likely beating them 2/3 times during that stretch

3) Luongo's meltdowns likely don't happen

what about signing Petr Schaefer over Brendan Morrison only to have Calgary pick him up right away

Morrison still did nothing with them.

Gillis is a good GM. The Canucks have fallen off the last couple years but we are in a position to gain a lot of cap space this summer.

The OP makes a point with the Mats Sundin comment. Now that the Canucks lost their "elite status," they aren't seen as a BIG PLAYER as much. Well we will have the cap space to make a statement if the chance/right player comes up.

But most of the rest of that post sounds completely biased in AV hate.

Gillis is well on his way to right the ship, any big success this year will be a "Cinderella story."

Mike has a great long term plan, this year seemed to be a sacrifice year, with kick at the can bargain signings like Santorelli, Richardson and Stanton. Which have worked out tremendously.

Crazy to believe that such integral parts of our team this year were in the minors/press box/contemplating leaving the NHL just before this season on different teams.

Buy out booth or trade him, plus probably another depth/roster player (Hansen maybe) and suddenly we have cap space. Something has to give as for sure some prospects are making the jump next year.

All that and we are still very competitive!

We are in a reset, it just took a transition season.

The last 10 years have been great to Canucks fans overall, let's enjoy another decade at least! We are a spoiled bunch after all!

The most overrated player in hockey? Played his best hockey in 2007? This is how I know you are retarded.

How does one simply just waltz onto CDC like this and post all this garbage implying that they magically know everything....

Seriously though. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU KNOW? I didn't know that aimchair analysts like you all of a sudden know everything that goes on behind the scenes.

Stop wasting your life away like this. It's pathetic to see.

Yup, plenty of speculation/opinion/fantasy in the OP for sure.

OP, if you wanted to make a post based on facts that'd be fine, but the drivel you did post is no where near that.
