Madeline “Maddy” Stuart was born on November 13, 1996 in Brisbane, Queensland’s capital city. Like 270 Australian babies since 2007, she was born with Down syndrome. About 3,000 to 5,000 children worldwide are born with this chromosome disorder each year.

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder typically associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features and mild to moderate intellectual disability. The average IQ of a young adult with Down syndrome is 50, equivalent to the mental age of an 8 or 9 year-old child. But this varies widely, as education and proper care have been shown to improve the quality of life of people with down syndrome.

When it comes to Down syndrome, parents are far more influential on their children’s development than teachers and therapists. Madeline’s mother, Rosanne, Has been her biggest supporter. She has dedicated her life to helping Maddy achieve her goal – including maintaining her own Facebook page.

Are you all retarded? This is a story of a young girl with what would be traditionally regarded as a social barrier overcoming that with love and support to be all that she wants to be at this time. No one is holding a gun to her head. Do you think she cares about the stigma of sexual exploitation that clouds your appreciation of that? She's just happy to be able to belong.
