The Three Categories of Forwards

The reason we're stocking up on grit now is because we didn't have much quality grit before.

There's three categories that forwards can fall into: Scorers, Grinders, or Power Forwards.

Here's a look at our scorers:

Sedin

Sedin

Vrbata

Baertschi

McCann

Shinkaruk

Vey

Bonino

Matthias

Power Forwards:

Burrows

Hansen

Horvat

Sutter

Cassels

Grenier

Virtanen

Richardson

Kassian

Grinders:

Prust

Dorsett

Higgins

Kenins

Gaunce

I've bolded the acquisitions and re-signings that JB has made this summer. With the exceptions of Baertschi and Vey, JB has turned two non-helpful scorers' positions into positions for a PF and a Grinder.

One of the irks people have had with this team for a while is that the Canucks aren't physical enough. Well, we're getting more physical, and adding younger scoring while we're at it.

It's a good philosophy on how to build a team - a couple veteran leaders, young scorers and PFs, and veteran grinders.

For those of you complaining, our forwards will be fine - it's our defense we need to worry about..

Wrong. The categories of forwards are:

Sniper

Playmaker

Power Forward

Grinder

Two-Way Forward

Tough Guy

Have you never played NHL?

I have. Unfortunately, most NHL players irl don't have a translucent hammer next to their names if they're a grinder.

It's kinda sad when I see that Burrows, Hansen, Cassels, and even Horvat are considered powerforwards.

When I see powerforward I think of Lindros, Neely, Stevens, Tkachuk, Bertuzzi, Lucic...

Virtanen is the closest we've got to that.

Ain't that the truth?

As well, our tough guys are middle weights. It was shameful watching Dorsett getting pummeled by Engelland in the playoffs. That to me was one of the most demoralizing thing to witness in the playoffs this past spring.

And in what bizarro world is a 190 to 195 pounder considered a power forward? Burrows a power forward? Hansen a power forward? Cassels a power forward? These guys might qualify as power forwards in triple A bantam.

As far as scorers go, we've got two playmakers in the Sedins (neither of whom will shoot or take the puck to the net); Vrbata is a finisher in the regular season, but goes into a fetal position anytime the playoffs roll around; and the rest are unproven.

Yikes...team does not look good on paper. Well, at least there will be opportunities for a hero or two to emerge.

It's Enforcer. But close enough.

Somebody is going to try and correct you thinking you're talking about Scott Stevens. Somebody is going to get REKT.

Did we really? Kassian is big and tough, Prust is small and tough but fiesty so they are probably a draw. Bieksa is more physical than Bartkowski. Sutter is tall but weighs 6 lbs less than Bonino. Both players are non-physical, although Sutter probably gets an edge in hitting, Bonino in shot blocking.

As for getting younger, the three players we got are all UFAs. We gave up Kassian, an RFA, and Bonino with an extra year under his cheap contract.

Say what you want, the Kassian and Sutter trades sucked. The Bieksa trade was decent. Barkowski looks like a meh signing, especially compared to John Moore.

I prefer these categories:

Power-Forward Sniper

Power-Forward Playmaker

Power-Forward Two-Way Player

Power-Forward Grinder

I like power forwards, what can I say...

Power-Forward Power-Forward? ;)

Well I feel power forward is definitely a category, we don't currently have one in our roster.

The average height in the NHL is now 6 foot 3. THE AVERAGE. Weight is 217. Power forwards typically are above average. Think Lindros. Or Lucic. Sorry to burst anyones bubble about Virtanen, even if he plays a power game he will always be an undersized player.

Correct Categories for Forwards as seen by the scouts predicting future NHL prospects:

Skill Forward

Offensive Forward

Two-Way Forward

Defensive Specialist (think PK)

Franchise Player

And Power Forward

You could add grinder, utility player and enforcer to that list as they are roles too.

A great deal of our players would be utility players, some two-way, and a few skill or offensive, and two franchise.

jazz, stop being racist... there are many different shapes, sizes and colors of forwards

I know this is a joke but it's true. There are a few players that are an obvious fit for a certain category, but even then all players bring their own unique skill set to the game and you can't lump everyone into categories.

I know. I was doing this on more of a grit-to-scoring scale, with PFs being in the middle.
