The case for trading Auston Matthews

Recommended Posts

What possible interest does a superstar have to go from one of the biggest markets in hockey to the smallest? Throw in Arizona's ownership carousel and the situation with the arena and why would anyone voluntarily go there? There is no doubt he would make less money in just endorsements itself if he goes to a smaller market. If he wants to leave Toronto, New York is the only viable destination. He has the potential to be the best American-born player of all time, New York would push his stardom to the top.

This is an absolutely silly idea.

Austin Matthews isn't going anywhere. A 10 million dollar offer sheet isn't going to pry him away.

He'll likely be the second best center in the league in a few years and there really isn't an offer you can give to a contending team to make them consider trading him.

Anyone believing this garbage article must have gullible written on their forehead

How about 12 million?

Lou Lamoriello will have him signed this summer. He won't come close to RFA.

I'm not so sure. The money, term and clauses will all be nearly identical. All TO can offer is an 8th year and if AM doesn't want to be there thats not worth much. There's a real opportunity for a US kid to go home and play for a US team. We like it when Canadian kids come home.

I, like any Canuck's fan, would love to see TO lose Matthews to an offer sheet some day, or he simply walks away (and the Leafs get nothing) the first second he reaches UFA status.  Not a chance in Hell the Leafs trade the kid though.  Unless, of course, Mike Milbury becomes their GM!

Arizona has lots of problems. Toronto is going to pay Matthews like 13M. Arizona won't be able to afford that.

I follow him on Insta. He's great friends with a lot of the other players on the team and is extremely close with Mitch Marner. He seems to be very happy there.

So did TO until last year (come to think of it they have lots of d-zone problems this year too

AZ is going to be amassing a lot of talent with the tanking this season and next. If AMs dream is to play at home then he'll have the chance to sign an offer sheet, buddies or not. We'll see.

I'd called these rumors more conspiracy theories than anything.  But the gossip was that Matthews would like to play at home in Arizona.   So if Matthews would want to leave to Leafs it would be to sign with the Coyotes.  Based on that no teams would gut their team for Matthews without a long-term deal, which according to the gossip wouldn't happen because he only wants to play in 1 place.   That's why it's so farfetched.

What will happen, is the same thing that happen with every superstar.  Matthews is under team controls for at least 4-5 seasons (not sure when he's UFA eligible).   Therefore, his options are after his ELC : 1-ask for a trade and holdout until the Leafs get an impossible offer (tarnish his reputation and maybe missing a season or part of it)...2-signs short term cheap deals until he's UFA (at the risk of having a career ending injury and lose financial security), 3-sign a long-term deal securing his future and staying with the Leafs.

Money talks, when push come to shove, Matthews will choose $$$ and stay with the Leafs.

#4. Goes back to Europe until he gets what he wants................money isn't everything! He's been there before!

Toronto will match anything though. Overpaying your franchise player by $2M won't ruin your team.

You're making it sound like Arizona could just take him. If it was that easy then Toronto would have McDavid. There's absolutely no truth or rumour to him wanting to leave whatsoever. All signs point to him wanting to be there.

if AM actually signed a max offer sheet, what do you think the TO fan base would think? it would be a disaster for them.

After looking at their reddit they don't seem to care at all. He's going to be signed this July before Lou retires. If he hated where he plays he wouldn't have signed that sponsorship.

I could be off base on it, but something about it feels like Weber-Philly all over again. Lou was pretty stingy with his ELC negotiations.

Matthews got max bonuses. IIRC Lamoriello said it took them 10min to come to an agreement.

Clearly the odds of them trading Matthews is 0%

I think the argument the author was making is that in a salary cap NHL, having one or two players signed at 10+ million dollars is actually killing teams chances to compete beyond a year or two.  Pittsburgh has made it work, but Crosby and Malkin signed when the cap was lower.  Kane and Toews one a couple cups but after their big deals they've had to get rid of lots of depth and struggle to compete.  Maybe the Leafs don't have two of those players, but when Nylander, Matthews, Marner and Rielly all re-sign, it will be the beginning of the end for Toronto because they won't be able to round out their team.  The window is really only a few years long.
