Newell Brown Appreciation Thread

Perhaps the team’s best team-stat has been the Power play.

Brown deserves some recognition for delivering a successful PP campaign as the architect behind the Canucks PP.

It may now take a hit without Boeser as the finisher, but it has been a welcome respite from the drudgery of a rebuilding team with typically, dismal team stats.

Nice work, NB.

I have been very surprised at how well the powerplay has done, despite our lacklustre performance. I attributed most of it to Boeser, but perhaps Brown or even other players have something to do with it too.

To keep that power play producing next year requires another year from the Sedins.

Seeing how it fails without Brock may be the same without the twins.

My concern would be more for two strong powerplays. I think Bo and Boeser could be strong enough that adding almost any third forward could make a solid first unit. Without the twins though, I think we'd have a tough time making up a second unit, unless some other players step up in a big way (Leipsic, Archibald, Pettersson etc., or veteran players).

Newell is one of 2 experienced coaches.

I still haven't figured out what it is Doug Jarvis brings to the team.

Does anyone who attends practices know what Doug Jarvis and Manny are responsible for?

Newell's experience shows.

I also like that he seems to be having fun on the bench most games.

I guess it pretty old too.

I find it interesting that Jarvis and Manny were similar defensive centers, good at faceoffs and PK yet brought limited offence.

I thought one was redundant.

The Canucks started with Sutter, Eriksson, Bo and Granny on PK. Since Eriksson and Granny have gone down they have added Archie and Motte.

Likewise when Bo and Sutter were injured they brought in Dowd.

This leads me to believe that face offs and PK are not being coached, or are not coachable, because the team has had to bring in guys rather than use player on the roster.

I know I am oversimplifying somewhat, but it still has me wondering what it is that these 2 coaches actually bring to the team.

Gaudette should see some PP time this year if Northeastern gets knocked out early. The second unit really drops off this year because of our poor selection from the defense.

Imagine if this power play had a legite PP specialist on the point, Edler the enitre year in that roll was suffocating.

For everything bad Eddie does he is fantastic at keeping the puck the in zone. He just always refers to hank to qb againts the wall rather then Boeser though he got better at feend boes towards the end.

Pettersson played the point on the PP for Sweden last WJHC, and was very effective doing so.  Not an immediate fix but definitely worth a try if we aren't able to nab a better PP QB in this offseason.

I agree, the trouble sometimes are the shots he doesn't get through or misses the net entirely which are sometimes dangerous going back the other way,  it often kills the PP's momentum too.

and all along I thought Vanek was responsible for getting Brock on the PP and getting it running like a greased wheel.........................now I have to go and re think this. I am sure I saw a video of Vanek chatting it up with NB and pointing things out on a tablet hmmmmmmmmmmm

I was thinking the same, mostly.

Our PP totally blew and we were all annoyed with Boeser NOT BEING ON PP1 early season.

Along comes a clip of Vanek and NB talking in the hallway after a game. Vanek is drawing out (not with a dry erase, pointing) on the board and telling NB how to set up a PP, or so it appeared to me.

Next thing you know Boeser is setting up on his off wing with PP1, Gagner is no longer on PP1 and whattaya know... Pass it to Boeser works like a charm.

Brown or Vanek?
